"A tougher-textured, fuller-bodied, less seductive style of Cheval Blanc. Nevertheless, it is immensely impressive, rich, and capable of another 5-10 years of evolution."
Clive Coates
"Full, youthful, cedary, vigorous. Fine and ripe and complex. Really lovely fruit. Very elegant and lomg on the palate. I prefer this to the 1953. Caramel and coffee tones. A great bottle."
Decanter Magazine 3*
Dark and dense, rich and elegant with sweet, lush, long flavours of spice and fruit. 2009-2015

Extremely impressive, with beautifully balanced, harmonious sweet fruit on the palate. Medium ruby-red, ripe cherry and cassis aromas, medium-bodied, with rich, velvety fruit flavors, full, soft tannins and a powerful finish. (JS)

Masses of rich plums and prunes on the flavour. So rich-such a surprise. Big wine. This is a great Warre and should not be missed whenever it appears.

This full-bodied, sweet dessert wine, with its lovely amber color, is rich and voluptuous, with beautiful texture, loads of maple, honey and spice flavors, caramel notes that linger on the finish, and a nice, smoky, oxidized quality overall. It's balanced, and elegant, too.

Full mature colour. Very fine classy nose. This has excellent ripe fruit. There is even an element of the super creamy concentration you only usually fin in the 1961s. Full, concentrated, structured, lovely balance. Excellent fruit. A point now. Saint-Julian and Cabernet Sauvignon in all its glorious breed. Very complex long finish. Very fine indeed.
Robert Parker 89
This may be the most successful wine produced by this estate during the decade of the sixties, although some bottles of the 1962 come close to offering as much pleasure as the 1966. The wine may have turned the corner and begun its decline. I have never tasted it out of larger format bottles, but I suspect magnums of this wine might merit an outstanding evaluation. The wine has always been a classic Bordeaux, with more fruit and body than many 1966s. There is a degree of austerity, but the wine's dominant characteristics include a complex, tobacco, cedar, and red currant-scented nose, medium body, excellent concentration and ripeness, and a spicy, long, moderately tannic finish. Drink it up as it is unlikely to improve.
Neil Martin, Wine Journal, eRobert Parker 91
Poured blind by Jean-Hubert Delon at the château over lunch and then two months later at the vertical in London. Similar nose of both: leafy with touches of dried figs, earth and fresh tobacco. I felt that the sample in London showed a little more volatility, the one in Bordeaux medium-bodied with vibrant acidity with notes of sour cherry, forest floor, tobacco and a touch of greenness just poking through on the finish. I think the apogee for this wine was 5-6 years ago, but now it is fading slowly and graceful. Drink now. Tasted October 2007.

Fullish mature colour. Very good nose. This has balance and depth and rather more style than the 1970. Fullish, complex, generous, classy. Round, fullish, harmonious and still with vigor. Very good indeed. Lovely finish.
Neil Martin, Wine Journal, eRobert Parker 92
A bottle served blind at the pre-Xmas lunch chez the Good Bishop Gill. A deep garnet core with a thin brick rim. The nose is quintessential ¿66, masculine, a touch lean, hints of green leaves but on this bottle, great definition and vibrancy and definitely Pauillac. Cedar developing and then some iodine. The palate is medium-bodied with vibrant acidity, traditional claret at its best. Not complex, but very focused with slight abrasive tannins. Linear, yet wonderfully balanced with good ripeness on the leafy finish. Certainly a classy ¿66 at its peak. Very lovers of classic claret. Drink now-2015. Tasted December 2007

Very firm, with ripe plum and currant notes coming through its chewy texture, finishing with woodsy, bitter chocolate overtones.
Clive Coates
Elements of chocolate mousse, blackberry, red fruits and cedar. Rich and complex. This is a very fine, mature claret. Full and vigorous. Rich, even meaty, rather more structured than later vintages would suggest. Lots of ripe fruit, well balanced with acidity on the palate. Long, complex, concentrated: quite powerful and aristocratic on the attack.
Undergound Wine Journal 18.5/20
Deepest, darkest and bestwine of the flight. Ripe, earthy, hind of truffles on nose. Surprisingly deep, ripe, rich and long. A lovely mouthful of ripe, fully mature wine. Hint of leather. The biggest, richest, best 1970 Haut Brion I have tasted to date.

"The 1970 is an old style Lynch Bages with plenty of dry tannin in the finish. Compellingly aromatic, it offers aromas of cedar wood, spice box, tobacco, earth, black currants, and new saddle leather. Spicy, concentrated, and burly, with mouth-searing tannin, this big, thick wine is a terrific example of Lynch Bages made in an older style."
Undergound Wine Journal 18.5/20
"Very impressive, deep colour. Cedary, minty nose. Very ripe, California-style Cabernet. A fruity, tannic, minty wine. Great fruit extract. Sweet, rich, long. Loads of ripe, rich fruit. No rush drinking this." Tasting 3/1999

Very classy and beautiful, packed with botrityzed flavors. Marvelous blend of vanilla, cream, tobacco-box notes, with a lot of oak on it for now but also loads of pure, clean and elegant fruit. An infant that will age for a long time.-
Robert Parker 92
This is an outstanding Yquem..The top bottles exhibit plenty of ripe, concentrated tropical fruit and botrytis. Full-bodied, deep golden in color, with a spicy, caramel, toasted roti, fat flavor, this big, rich wine is devleoping quickly for an Yquem.
Clive Coates
Medium colour. Poerful youthful nose. Not yet luscious; very concentrated but youtful. Full, more luscious on the palate than the nose would indicate. Very concentrated. Still amazingly young. An exceptional wine, even better than the 1975. The Yquem of the 1970s.

Graham is another great port house, producing one of the deepest-colored and sweetest styles of vintage port. Along with Taylor and Fonseca, Graham has probably been the most consistent producer of great port in the post- World War II era. Their tawnys are quite good rather than exceptional, but their vintage ports are truly sublime and sumptuous.
Michael Broadbent 5 *
A very good wine. ..gradual colour loss through the 1980s but, as it matured, a wonderful melange of fragrances developing: liquorice, strawberry, fig; fleshy, lovely fruit. Nearly 20, always admiring notes..very rich, powerful bouquet opoening up beautifully; sweet, good body and backbone, marvellous length, spicy finish. Most recently: deliciou!

An outstanding 1978, Ducru-Beaucaillou's effort displays a fragrant, well-developed bouquet of licorice, earth, black currants, and underbrush. Rich for a 1978, with none of the vegetal character now found in many wines of this vintage, this fully mature, medium-bodied wine exhibits soft tannin, excellent concentration and purity, and a sweet, elegant finish. Anticipated maturity: now-2010. Last tasted 3/97

Firm, tight, intense and spicy, with rich, earth, mineral and currant flavors, hints of anise and cedar, and a full, complex aftertaste. Impressive for its structure and concentration; lingers long on the finish.--1978 California Cabernet retrospective.

Robert Parker 94
"A once perfect wine, the 1978 Rayas is finally beginning to lose its thick, juicy, succulent personality, and drop some of its hugely concentrated jammy blackraspberry/kirsch/cherry fruit. A dark garnet color with an amber edge, is followed by a still stunning, exotic bouquet consisting of Asian spices, jammy black fruits, garrigue, smoked meats, and pepper. However, in the three separate tastings I noted that the wine is losing its sweetness, and just beginning to reveal acidity and a tannic bitterness in the finish. At its finest, this was a perfect wine that admirably demonstrated the excitement Rayas can produce. Owners should consume it quickly." 94 pts. R. Parker

No doubt this vintage of La Mission-Haut-Brion was probably overlooked once the highly publicized 1982 vintage was conceived, but this wine has always been, in my opinion, one of the stars of the vintage. It showed extremely well with a big, rich, berry, smoky-scented bouquet, medium-bodied, alcoholic, deep flavors, huge fruit, and a long finish. It has shed much tannin, and seems to be nearing its plateau of maturity, where I would expect it to last for 10-15 years.
Wine Spectator 91
"Has good fruit. Medium ruby-red in color, with aromas of milk chocolate and spice. Medium-bodied, with medium-full tannins and plenty of earthy vanilla and chocolate flavors."
Clive Coates 18.5
Deep colour. Still barely mature. Lovely nose?Medium-full body. Good acidity. Plenty of fruit. This is very stylish. It finishes well and will still last. Vertical tasting 2001

A very supple, generous, fruity wine that's charming to drink now but has the depth of flavor and balance for further aging. Oozing with fresh, ripe, lush cherry, currant, plum and spicy mineral flavors that are very deductive. The tannins are smooth but thick and rich enough for further aging. A style that combines early drinking fracd with medium-range aging potential.

I have drunk several cases of this wine, but this was one of the finest bottles I ever tasted. This dark plum/garnet-colored, extraordinarily fragrant 1982 offers a terrific bouquet of roasted coffee, cedar wood, prunes, plums, and cherry liqueur. Sexy, opulently-textured, medium to full-bodied, and extremely low in acidity, it boasts wonderfully fresh fruit. This La Dominique, while fully mature (it has been for over a decade), displays no signs of losing its intensity or succulent fatness. Drink it over the next ten years.

1982 La Lagune (750ml)

Robert Parker 92
"A beautifully made wine, the 1982 is my favorite La Lagune of the last 20 years. Again, I misjudged the aging potential of this wine, thinking it would be fully mature by the early nineties. It can be drunk, given its sweet fragrance of toasty oak and ripe black-cherries and currants. However, it is exhibiting more tannin and structure than I would have imagined. It is a powerful, full-bodied La Lagune with super concentration and a thick, juicy personality. There are no signs of color degradation. The wine has some tannin to shed, so another 1-2 years of cellaring would be beneficial, particularly where the wine has been stored under ideal conditions. It is a classic 1982 that appears to be a synthesis in style between a right bank Pomerol and a more austere Medoc. Complex and rich, as well as more structured than I initially believed, this wine should achieve full maturity by the end of the decade, and last through the first two decades of the next century. Tasted 10 times since bottling with consistent notes." Unquestionably the greatest La Lagune until the 2005 was conceived, the 1982 exhibits a dense ruby/purple-tinged color along with a big, sweet bouquet of black cherries, licorice, smoky toast, and forest floor, a plush, medium to full-bodied mouthfeel, and sweet tannin. It is close to full maturity, and should keep for another decade.
Steve Tanzer's International Wine Cellar 91
"Good red-ruby color. Expressive, slightly funky, Burgundian aromas of red raspberry, redcurrant, cherry, smoked meat, coffee and earth. At once dense and penetrating; rich but uncompromisingly dry, with lovely clarity of flavor. Long, resounding finish offers excellent grip. A superb vintage for this chateau. (A second sample showed somewhat more candied aromas of cherry, red fruits, leather and smoked meat; a lush, sweet palate, and considerable inner-mouth flavor nicely framed by ripe acids. I gave this very likable bottle the same score of 91.) Drink now to 2015."
eRobert Parker Hedonist's Gazette

Red-ruby. Highly aromatic nose of raspberry, redcurrant, graphite, licorice and cedar. Leanish, dry and classic, with firm acidity but less flesh than the '96. Lovely traditionally made claret, with terrific finesse and grip. Still evolving. (A second bottle showed a somewhat leathery nose and came across as drier in the middle palate; it was not quite as fresh as the better sample.) Drink now through 2020.
Robert Parker 92
This traditionally made, old style, extremely dense, powerful wine requires another 7-10 years of cellaring. An opaque dark garnet color is followed by aromas of sweet cedar, old wood, truffles, smoke, and underbrush. Big, thick, juicy, black currant, and cherry flavors can be found in this muscular, monster-sized, exceedingly tannic, dense, backward wine. Immensely impressive for its size, strength, and structure, this 1982 requires another 5-10 years of cellaring. It is unquestionably one of the most concentrated wines of the Medoc, and it should last another 30-40 years.

"A solid, firm wine with a tannin structure that is softening. Aromas of chocolate, ripe fruit and meat. Full-bodied, with loads of fruit and tannins and a long, long finish. Thick and chewy. Gorgeous." --Latour vertical. Drink now through 2010.
Robert Parker 88
"Tasted from my cellar, this wine is fully mature, not terribly concentrated, and slightly herbaceous, exhibiting aromas of sweaty saddle leather, melted asphalt, tobacco, and red as well as black fruits. Notions of caramel and roasted nuts also emerge. A medium-bodied effort with soft tannin, but little persistence and length, it requires consumption over the next decade."

"Medium-bodied, with sweet but noticeable tannin in the finish, as well as beautiful elegance and complexity, this wine is close to reaching its plateau of maturity. I have always thought it resembled this property's 1966. It should last for another 20 years. Last tasted, 7/93."

There is plenty of depth here...Medium-full body, the tannins are now beginning to soften. This is an attractive, balanced wine with ripe fruit.
Wine Spectator 94
Super-refined 1983 Bordeaux with an excellent deep ruby color and intense cigar-box, plum and berry aromas and flavors; there's even a hint of mint. It's full-bodied but very reserved in style with fine tannins and a seductively long finish. Better after 1997.

"A stunning wine, Pichon-Lalande's 1983 has been gorgeous to drink for a number of years. It is one of the finest 1983s, especially for a northern Medoc. The color remains a dark ruby/purple, with slight lightening at the edge. The knock-out nose of roasted herbs, sweet, jammy black currants, and pain grille is followed by a full-bodied, gorgeously concentrated and well-proportioned wine with low acidity, plenty of glycerin, and a savory, highly extracted, fleshy mouthfeel. This has always been one of the stars of the vintage. Anticipated maturity: Now-2008. Last tasted 6/97."
Wine Spectator 92
"This wine has always been underrated. Shows wonderful aromas of chocolate, berry and earth. Full-bodied, with full, velvety tannins and a sweet berry finish."

Light golden with just the slightest tint of green, the 1983 Rieussec, from an excellent year for Sauternes, is certainly one of this property's greatest wines. Well structured with excellent acidity, and a deep, long, rich, full-bodied, viscous texture, this wine, despite the richness and power, is neither heavy nor cloying. It has gorgeous balance and a very long, lingering, spectacular finish. One of the great successes of the vintage.

Rich, fat and spicy on the nose. A lot of depth and quality here. Good new oak base. Very concentrated fruit. Chocolatey. Still a little unresolved tannin. Good concentration. Full and succulent. Rich, ample and voluptuous. Still youthful. Great depth. Fine quality.
Steve Tanzer's International Wine Cellar 93
Medium red, with a hint of amber at the rim. Pungent, highly complex nose combines redcurrant, autumn leaves, sweet tobacco, smoked meat, truffle and mint. Dense and silky, with a firm spine of acidity giving the wine excellent penetration and vinosity. Impeccably balanced and sweet. Finishes firmly tannic, with superb subtle persistence. The backward 1985 Eisele Vineyard is marvelously concentrated, but extremely tannic and at least 5-10 years away from full maturity. Impressively endowed, well-focused, dense, powerful, thick, and tannic, this wine leaves little doubt that the extract, ripeness, and quantity of fruit are more than sufficient to balance out the wine's tannic ferocity. This is a huge, massive, stunningly proportioned Cabernet Sauvignon that should hit its stride by the turn of the century and last for two decades.

Another super wine from this cru bourgeois. Fresh and fine with tasty vanilla, cherry and spice character. It's full-bodied, but medium in tannins. Long, fine finish.

Big, rich, muscular style with St.-Julien grace; a spicy, oaky and red currant wine with concentrated, powerful flavors flanked by firm tannins that will benefit from cellaring.

Extremely understated and closed, it starts out slowly but finishes quickly. Deep ruby-purple, with berry and cherry aromas and flavors, full-bodied, very tannic and hard. Great future. (JS)

Wealthy collectors will have a great deal of fun comparing the 1986, 1988, and 1989 as they evolve over the years. The 1986 was the finest Guiraud made up to that point. I believe it to be a worthy rival of the great 1988, although I suspect the 1988 will last longer and have higher acidity and better overall balance. However, the 1986 is a super concentrated, aromatic wine with gobs of botrytis, and creamy, unctuous, peach, pineapple, and apricot flavors. There is plenty of new oak to frame the wine, although the overall acidity is less than in the 1988. The finish is exceptionally long and well balanced. This is a massive, concentrated wine that should easily develop over several decades. Anticipated maturity: Now-2009.

A fabulous, exotic blockbuster of great balance and harmony, tasting of orange slices and chocolate, honey and cream, leading to an intense finish. Tempting now but built for aging.

"This wine possesses a profoundly deep ruby/purple color exhibiting no signs of age. A sweet, jammy, blackcurrant, truffle, licorice, and vanillin-scented nose is youthful as well as expressive. Full-bodied, structured, and rich, with high tannin and equally high levels of fruit, glycerin, and extract, this is an atypically youthful, well-balanced California Cabernet that is just beginning to open and reveal secondary nuances and flavors. Accessible and impressive to drink, it will only get better over the next 5-10 years, and it will keep for another 20 years. The tasting notes for this section are from two single blind tastings, one conducted in May, 1996, in California, and the other in June, 1996, in Baltimore."

The 1986 Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon still boasts an opaque dark garnet color. In addition, it remains tannic, backward, and youthful. The wine possesses admirable power and richness, but it is interesting to contrast the type of tannin in the 1986 (astringent, bitter, hard, and intrusive) with the style of tannin La Jota has achieved since 1992 (sweet, well-integrated, and ripe). This wine may turn out to be outstanding, but it is no sure bet, particularly when compared to their gorgeously opulent, complex, rich, 1986 Cabernet Franc. In spite of being powerfully endowed with considerable levels of fruit, extract, glycerin, and tannin, my instincts suggest this Cabernet Sauvignon will always possess an excess of tannin. I would continue to age this wine for another 2-3 years, hoping for some softening; drink it over the following 10-15 years.

"The 1986 La Mission-Haut-Brion possesses dark ruby color, a spicy, mineral and tobacco-scented bouquet, firm tannins, medium to full body, and excellent potential for extended cellaring. The compactness noticeable in early tastings has been replaced by a more expansive, generous feeling of fruit."

The 1986 Cabernet Sauvignon Backus Vineyard is remarkable. It possesses an opaque purple/black color with no lightening or amber at the edge. A huge, exotic nose of sweet, toasty oak, smoked herbs, grilled meats, and black fruits soars from the glass. This lusty, powerful, classically-structured Cabernet reveals superb richness, full body, and a long, sweet, rich finish with no signs of fruit oxidation or deterioration. This wine will benefit from another 2-3 years of cellaring, and will keep for 15-20 years - amazing!

The youngest and most backward, and the most promising wine of the four 1986 wines in this segment, is the 1986 Cabernet Sauvignon Eisele Vineyard. The dense purple color with no lightening or amber is followed by a classic Eisele nose of crushed stones/minerals, black-raspberries/currants, and spicy wood. Full-bodied, concentrated, and pure, yet very youthful, this wine could easily have passed for a 3-4 year old California Cabernet. Hefty and concentrated, with considerable tannin, it requires another 2-4 years of cellaring; it will last for 20 years.
