Robert Parker 90
"A tougher-textured, fuller-bodied, less seductive style of Cheval Blanc. Nevertheless, it is immensely impressive, rich, and capable of another 5-10 years of evolution."
Clive Coates
"Full, youthful, cedary, vigorous. Fine and ripe and complex. Really lovely fruit. Very elegant and lomg on the palate. I prefer this to the 1953. Caramel and coffee tones. A great bottle."
Decanter Magazine 3*
Dark and dense, rich and elegant with sweet, lush, long flavours of spice and fruit. 2009-2015

Extremely impressive, with beautifully balanced, harmonious sweet fruit on the palate. Medium ruby-red, ripe cherry and cassis aromas, medium-bodied, with rich, velvety fruit flavors, full, soft tannins and a powerful finish. (JS)

Masses of rich plums and prunes on the flavour. So rich-such a surprise. Big wine. This is a great Warre and should not be missed whenever it appears.

"The 1970 is an old style Lynch Bages with plenty of dry tannin in the finish. Compellingly aromatic, it offers aromas of cedar wood, spice box, tobacco, earth, black currants, and new saddle leather. Spicy, concentrated, and burly, with mouth-searing tannin, this big, thick wine is a terrific example of Lynch Bages made in an older style."
Undergound Wine Journal 18.5/20
"Very impressive, deep colour. Cedary, minty nose. Very ripe, California-style Cabernet. A fruity, tannic, minty wine. Great fruit extract. Sweet, rich, long. Loads of ripe, rich fruit. No rush drinking this." Tasting 3/1999

Wine Spectator 93
Very classy and beautiful, packed with botrityzed flavors. Marvelous blend of vanilla, cream, tobacco-box notes, with a lot of oak on it for now but also loads of pure, clean and elegant fruit. An infant that will age for a long time.-
Robert Parker 92
This is an outstanding Yquem..The top bottles exhibit plenty of ripe, concentrated tropical fruit and botrytis. Full-bodied, deep golden in color, with a spicy, caramel, toasted roti, fat flavor, this big, rich wine is devleoping quickly for an Yquem.
Clive Coates
Medium colour. Poerful youthful nose. Not yet luscious; very concentrated but youtful. Full, more luscious on the palate than the nose would indicate. Very concentrated. Still amazingly young. An exceptional wine, even better than the 1975. The Yquem of the 1970s.

1975 Gruaud-Larose (750ml)

Robert Parker 89
This massive, backward wine appears to resist aging. Still bitterly tannic, impressively-colored (dark garnet with no amber), and monstrous on the palate, this wine will either turn out like the outstanding 1928 and begin to reveal some charm and character around age 40, or it will dry out, much like the 1948. It needs another 5-10 years of cellaring. The excruciatingly painful level of tannin makes this wine an enigma. It is likely to be appreciated only by the most patient Bordeaux enthusiasts. I would not be surprised to see some wine writer touting its greatness around 2025, long after most of it had been consumed and found to be pleasureless. Owners should try not to touch a bottle before 2005.
Clive Coates
Good colour. A little auster on the nose. Medium-full body. This is bettern than the 1978 but not brilliant. There is a little astringency, and though the fruit is quite class, it is not ample enough fine. Long though. Very good indeed.

1977 Grahams (750ml)

Robert Parker 93
Graham is another great port house, producing one of the deepest-colored and sweetest styles of vintage port. Along with Taylor and Fonseca, Graham has probably been the most consistent producer of great port in the post- World War II era. Their tawnys are quite good rather than exceptional, but their vintage ports are truly sublime and sumptuous.
Michael Broadbent 5 *
A very good wine. ..gradual colour loss through the 1980s but, as it matured, a wonderful melange of fragrances developing: liquorice, strawberry, fig; fleshy, lovely fruit. Nearly 20, always admiring notes..very rich, powerful bouquet opoening up beautifully; sweet, good body and backbone, marvellous length, spicy finish. Most recently: deliciou!

Firm, tight, intense and spicy, with rich, earth, mineral and currant flavors, hints of anise and cedar, and a full, complex aftertaste. Impressive for its structure and concentration; lingers long on the finish.--1978 California Cabernet retrospective.

Robert Parker 94
"A once perfect wine, the 1978 Rayas is finally beginning to lose its thick, juicy, succulent personality, and drop some of its hugely concentrated jammy blackraspberry/kirsch/cherry fruit. A dark garnet color with an amber edge, is followed by a still stunning, exotic bouquet consisting of Asian spices, jammy black fruits, garrigue, smoked meats, and pepper. However, in the three separate tastings I noted that the wine is losing its sweetness, and just beginning to reveal acidity and a tannic bitterness in the finish. At its finest, this was a perfect wine that admirably demonstrated the excitement Rayas can produce. Owners should consume it quickly." 94 pts. R. Parker

No doubt this vintage of La Mission-Haut-Brion was probably overlooked once the highly publicized 1982 vintage was conceived, but this wine has always been, in my opinion, one of the stars of the vintage. It showed extremely well with a big, rich, berry, smoky-scented bouquet, medium-bodied, alcoholic, deep flavors, huge fruit, and a long finish. It has shed much tannin, and seems to be nearing its plateau of maturity, where I would expect it to last for 10-15 years.
Wine Spectator 91
"Has good fruit. Medium ruby-red in color, with aromas of milk chocolate and spice. Medium-bodied, with medium-full tannins and plenty of earthy vanilla and chocolate flavors."
Clive Coates 18.5
Deep colour. Still barely mature. Lovely nose?Medium-full body. Good acidity. Plenty of fruit. This is very stylish. It finishes well and will still last. Vertical tasting 2001

Spicy but aggressive in its youth, but rich, ripe fruit on the nose, crisp flavour and bitter tanins noted towards the end of the decade.

Wine Spectator 91
A very supple, generous, fruity wine that's charming to drink now but has the depth of flavor and balance for further aging. Oozing with fresh, ripe, lush cherry, currant, plum and spicy mineral flavors that are very deductive. The tannins are smooth but thick and rich enough for further aging. A style that combines early drinking fracd with medium-range aging potential.

1982 La Dominique (750ml)

Robert Parker 92
I have drunk several cases of this wine, but this was one of the finest bottles I ever tasted. This dark plum/garnet-colored, extraordinarily fragrant 1982 offers a terrific bouquet of roasted coffee, cedar wood, prunes, plums, and cherry liqueur. Sexy, opulently-textured, medium to full-bodied, and extremely low in acidity, it boasts wonderfully fresh fruit. This La Dominique, while fully mature (it has been for over a decade), displays no signs of losing its intensity or succulent fatness. Drink it over the next ten years.

Steve Tanzer's International Wine Cellar 91+
Red-ruby. Highly aromatic nose of raspberry, redcurrant, graphite, licorice and cedar. Leanish, dry and classic, with firm acidity but less flesh than the '96. Lovely traditionally made claret, with terrific finesse and grip. Still evolving. (A second bottle showed a somewhat leathery nose and came across as drier in the middle palate; it was not quite as fresh as the better sample.) Drink now through 2020.
Robert Parker 92
This traditionally made, old style, extremely dense, powerful wine requires another 7-10 years of cellaring. An opaque dark garnet color is followed by aromas of sweet cedar, old wood, truffles, smoke, and underbrush. Big, thick, juicy, black currant, and cherry flavors can be found in this muscular, monster-sized, exceedingly tannic, dense, backward wine. Immensely impressive for its size, strength, and structure, this 1982 requires another 5-10 years of cellaring. It is unquestionably one of the most concentrated wines of the Medoc, and it should last another 30-40 years.

It exhibits the classic honeyed pineapple and spicy oakiness that makes Climens so profound. In the mouth, this wine is opulent and extremely rich, with gobs of glycerin yet enough acidity to give it plenty of definition and crispness. It is a beautifully made, stunning Barsac?"

One of the top wines of the vintage, as well as one of the youngest tasting 1983s, this wine continues to display a healthy deep ruby/purple color, and an intense bouquet of lead pencil, blackcurrants, and spicy oak. Medium to full-bodied, with a well-delineated, beautifully elegant yet rich, authoritative taste, this classic Las Cases appears to be 2-5 years away from full maturity. It should keep for 20 more years. An immensely impressive 1983!

Robert Parker 94
"A stunning wine, Pichon-Lalande's 1983 has been gorgeous to drink for a number of years. It is one of the finest 1983s, especially for a northern Medoc. The color remains a dark ruby/purple, with slight lightening at the edge. The knock-out nose of roasted herbs, sweet, jammy black currants, and pain grille is followed by a full-bodied, gorgeously concentrated and well-proportioned wine with low acidity, plenty of glycerin, and a savory, highly extracted, fleshy mouthfeel. This has always been one of the stars of the vintage. Anticipated maturity: Now-2008. Last tasted 6/97."
Wine Spectator 92
"This wine has always been underrated. Shows wonderful aromas of chocolate, berry and earth. Full-bodied, with full, velvety tannins and a sweet berry finish."
Clive Coates 18.5/20
"Good fullish mature colour. Plump, accessible nose full of bramble fruit. Most attractive. Medium body. A fine result for the vintage. Good acidity. Generous and seductive. Ripe and fat. Absolutely a point. Very long and lovely finish."
Decanter Magazine
DECANTER AWARD WINNER "Deep mature colour, with lovely scented ripe fruit on the nose. Great length and breeding on the palate - a wine of real class, perfect for drinking now but will keep, as it is still very youthful." Sept 1995

"Fully mature, this seductively rich wine offers a knock-out nose of spring flowers, black fruits, smoke, and roasted herbs. Expansive and round with a velvety texture, real opulence, and low acidity, this concentrated, deliciously layered and intense wine reveals no hard edges. It represents the beginning of Rauzan-Segla's rebound in quality. Anticipated maturity: Now-2008."

Robert Parker 92
Light golden with just the slightest tint of green, the 1983 Rieussec, from an excellent year for Sauternes, is certainly one of this property's greatest wines. Well structured with excellent acidity, and a deep, long, rich, full-bodied, viscous texture, this wine, despite the richness and power, is neither heavy nor cloying. It has gorgeous balance and a very long, lingering, spectacular finish. One of the great successes of the vintage.
Wine Spectator 94
Nectar-like if a bit on the sweet side, impressively complex, concentrated and focused. Deep gold, big, sweet and rich, with gobs of concentrated fig, brown sugar, butterscotch and oak flavor. A knockout.

"This flamboyantly scented wine is a lusciously rich, opulent, medium- to full-bodied, fat, and juicy style of Cheval Blanc that seems to get better and better every time I taste it."
Clive Coates
Rich, fat and spicy on the nose. A lot of depth and quality here. Good new oak base. Very concentrated fruit. Chocolatey. Still a little unresolved tannin. Good concentration. Full and succulent. Rich, ample and voluptuous. Still youthful. Great depth. Fine quality.
Steve Tanzer's International Wine Cellar 93
Medium red, with a hint of amber at the rim. Pungent, highly complex nose combines redcurrant, autumn leaves, sweet tobacco, smoked meat, truffle and mint. Dense and silky, with a firm spine of acidity giving the wine excellent penetration and vinosity. Impeccably balanced and sweet. Finishes firmly tannic, with superb subtle persistence. A particularly lovely '85, in the elegant style of the vintage. Drink now through 2015.

A saturated dark plum/garnet color with amber at the edge is followed by an attractive smoky, underbrush, and truffle-scented wine with coffee, smoke, cedar, and jammy cassis/plum-like fruit. As the wine sits in the glass, notes of Chinese black tea, pepper, and soy emerge. There is surprising tannin and austerity in the finish, but the aromatics and attack were convincingly rich and intense.
Michael Broadbent
"Still fairly deep; a blishfully beautiful bouquet that blossomed in the glass; sweet-as red wines go-and very rich, yet (again) with that hallmakr of fine wine: perfect balance, weight and flavour. If not as submlime as the 1961, unahamedly good." Decanter, July 2008

Wealthy collectors will have a great deal of fun comparing the 1986, 1988, and 1989 as they evolve over the years. The 1986 was the finest Guiraud made up to that point. I believe it to be a worthy rival of the great 1988, although I suspect the 1988 will last longer and have higher acidity and better overall balance. However, the 1986 is a super concentrated, aromatic wine with gobs of botrytis, and creamy, unctuous, peach, pineapple, and apricot flavors. There is plenty of new oak to frame the wine, although the overall acidity is less than in the 1988. The finish is exceptionally long and well balanced. This is a massive, concentrated wine that should easily develop over several decades. Anticipated maturity: Now-2009.
Wine Spectator 93
A fabulous, exotic blockbuster of great balance and harmony, tasting of orange slices and chocolate, honey and cream, leading to an intense finish. Tempting now but built for aging.

The 1986 Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon still boasts an opaque dark garnet color. In addition, it remains tannic, backward, and youthful. The wine possesses admirable power and richness, but it is interesting to contrast the type of tannin in the 1986 (astringent, bitter, hard, and intrusive) with the style of tannin La Jota has achieved since 1992 (sweet, well-integrated, and ripe). This wine may turn out to be outstanding, but it is no sure bet, particularly when compared to their gorgeously opulent, complex, rich, 1986 Cabernet Franc. In spite of being powerfully endowed with considerable levels of fruit, extract, glycerin, and tannin, my instincts suggest this Cabernet Sauvignon will always possess an excess of tannin. I would continue to age this wine for another 2-3 years, hoping for some softening; drink it over the following 10-15 years.

The 1986 Cabernet Sauvignon Backus Vineyard is remarkable. It possesses an opaque purple/black color with no lightening or amber at the edge. A huge, exotic nose of sweet, toasty oak, smoked herbs, grilled meats, and black fruits soars from the glass. This lusty, powerful, classically-structured Cabernet reveals superb richness, full body, and a long, sweet, rich finish with no signs of fruit oxidation or deterioration. This wine will benefit from another 2-3 years of cellaring, and will keep for 15-20 years - amazing!

The youngest and most backward, and the most promising wine of the four 1986 wines in this segment, is the 1986 Cabernet Sauvignon Eisele Vineyard. The dense purple color with no lightening or amber is followed by a classic Eisele nose of crushed stones/minerals, black-raspberries/currants, and spicy wood. Full-bodied, concentrated, and pure, yet very youthful, this wine could easily have passed for a 3-4 year old California Cabernet. Hefty and concentrated, with considerable tannin, it requires another 2-4 years of cellaring; it will last for 20 years.

"Distinctive for its ripe wild berry, cherry, earth and mint flavors. It's complex, elegant and well-focused.."
Robert Parker 90
"The 1986 Insignia, a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, and 10% Cabernet Franc, is much more forward and developed than the 1986 Backus Vineyard. The exotic, sexy fragrance of roasted coffee, sweet cedar, red and black fruits, spices, and ginger struck me as vaguely reminiscent of the 1947 Mouton-Rothschild. In the mouth, the wine is another animal, exhibiting sweet, juicy fruit, medium to full body, and a surprising herbaceousness that is nicely balanced by the wine's lush, concentrated fruit, high glycerin, and overall size. This may be a controversial Cabernet given its exaggerated personality, but I loved it! Fully mature, it should continue to drink well for another decade. 1986 was the last outstanding vintage for the Joseph Phelps portfolio of Cabernet Sauvignons until the 1991 vintage (although 1990 was good, it was not as superb as the vintage's quality would suggest)."

The lyrical abstract art of Hans Hartung embodies the essence of his own personal individualism. "The 1996 harvest was classic in character, with ripeness balanced by ample acidity and a fine structure filled out by elegant fruit. The 1986 Brut Vintage is fresh and delicate, with a great subtle interplay of tropical fruit flavors and toasty nuances culminating in an elegant finish." Claude Taittinger

"Oodles of luscious oak notes envelop the herb, currant and fruit flavors in this firm but velvety wine. Very deep in color, with plenty of tannin to lose as it ages. Oaky flavors last through the finish. Overall it's big and generous."
Robert Parker 91
"Copious amounts of toasty, vanillin, and smoky new oak aromas accompany lavish amounts of rich cassis fruit. In the mouth, the wine exhibits a multidimensional texture, with layers of black-cherry and curranty fruit wrapped in generous quantities of new oak. "Tannic and flavorful, if not quite as focused as some of the other grands crus, hinting at plum and cherry flavors with echoes of vanilla, tea and cedar notes on the finish. Has the depth and dimension to age gracefully."
Robert Parker 92
I do not think I have ever tasted a better example of Echezeaux, a wine that is usually their lightest and quickest to mature. In 1988, it is bursting with rich, concentrated, berry fruit, has the exotic, oriental spice character that often marks the wines from this domaine, and is sensationally long and full. Even though it is the most forward wine from the domaine, I would wait at least 5 years before drinking this beauty. I feel it has the requisite depth, concentration, power, and tannin to last two decades. The prices for the wines of the Domaine de la Romanee-Conti may be exorbitant but the quality of the wines produced in the eighties is truly remarkable. The 1988s are celestial wines selling at stratospheric prices. The 1988 production was twice what it was in 1987, but the same as in 1985. The 1988s are fuller-bodied, deeper, more concentrated wines than the superb 1987s, and will need some time in the cellar to shed their generous amounts of tannin. The only vintage they can be favorably compared with is the 1985 vintage, and the 1985s were a great deal more forward and flattering to taste when young. There is more depth in the 1988s than in the 1986s or even the superb 1980s (which turned out to be the finest wines made in that underrated vintage).
Allen Meadows, Burghound 92
Wonderfully complex nose with aromas of spice, tea and crushed dried roses followed by rich, detailed and relatively big flavors. Echézeaux often can be one of those wines that displays grand cru complexity and premier cru weight and a trace of finishing rusticity but this '88 is a big wine and every bit a true grand cru. Very impressive. Another recent bottle tasted in Burgundy was a good deal harder and austere and while it was still good, it did not have the above bottle's balance.

The 1988 has to be among the top two or three Cabernets of the vintage. Other than 1983, the 3,300 cases produced in 1988 is the smallest production of Dominus to date, as over half the crop was deemed unsatisfactory. Twenty-five percent new oak was used. The dense, opaque ruby/purple color exhibits great saturation and intensity, and the nose is beginning to offer up smoked herb and ripe cassis aromas. In the mouth, the wine is deep, medium to full-bodied, with excellent concentration, and one of the longest, richest finishes I have found in a Cabernet Sauvignon from 1988. The tannins are noticeable, but softer than in the 1989 or 1987. Of all the current Dominus offerings, I suspect the 1988 and 1984 are the most flattering to drink at present. Nevertheless, this wine should easily evolve for another 10-15 or more years.

"Lively and elegant, with lots of raspberry and wild strawberry flavors packed into a firm framework. The tannins are held in check, adding to the tension that should resolve itself with cellaring"

"The 1988 is built along the lines of the 1966, but better made and more concentrated. Medium-bodied, rich, and tannic, it will have to be cellared until the end of this century."
Clive Coates
"Medium-full body. Lovely fruit. Very well balanced. The follow-through is rich and complex and ample, and the wine finishes very long and subtle. Very fine mulberry fruit. More classic than the 1989 and 1990. Fine quality."

A distinctive bubbly with a deep yellow-gold color and intriguingly mature flavors that catch your attention. Smoky, nutty, toasty accents emerge in the aroma and continue through the finish. A fine bead and luxurious texture complete the package.

E Robert Parker In Asia, Lisa Perrotit-Brown 91
Medium to deep garnet-brick colour. Savoury / earthy notes of soy, hung meat, sweaty leather, tobacco, truffle, a suggestion of cardamom and a slight medicinal / menthol character. The palate gives a high level of acidity with a medium level of silky tannins and a good concentration of spicy, savoury fruit. Long finish. Drink now to 2013. Lisa Perrotti-Brown

A sophisticated, complex Champagne, with toasty aromas, distinctive but reserved mineral flavors, lush texture and a lingering finish. Outstanding in a subtle style.

This is the first vintage with the beautiful white label. Even the wine is beautiful and tasteful. The nose is already mature, with elements of cheese, milk toffee, and licorice¿

The 1988 remains a very backward wine. Full-bodied and powerful, extremely rich and dense, it may be the least evolved 1988. The nose offers enticing coconut, orange, vanilla, and honeyed scents. The flavors are highly extracted. The wine's acidity and youthfulness suggest this wine needs another 5-10 years of cellaring. It should keep for 30 years.

Sweet, ripe and loaded with honey, toffee, carameland nutmeg-scented pear and apricot aromas andflavors. Generous fig and tobacco notes echo onthe long finish. A silky, supple, succulent winefrom France that should improve through at least 2000.
