Tasted at the Fine Wine Experience?s Pavie vertical. Perhaps the last great Pavie before G�rard Perse bought the estate in 1997. The 1990 Pavie sports a deep core with deep tawny rim and sports a very ?classic? Pavie bouquet that is muted at first, but unfurls gracefully with intense cedar aromas deriving from the Cabernet Sauvignon. Underneath there are aromas of crushed stone and a touch of cold black tea. It does not have the vim and vigour of the 1989. The palate is medium-bodied and whilst it is not as vigorous as a couple of years ago, it retains a supple texture, impressive harmony and a lovely wild strawberry, fig, leather and brine tinged finish. Fresh and vital, this is holding up well. Tasted June 2010.

I have been extolling the virtues of these wines since the late eighties. Extremely old vines, organic farming, and some of the lowest yields in Bordeaux produce densely-colored, highly-extracted, exceptionally pure and elegant wines that possess a Burgundian-like texture and complexity. The 1990 Pavie-Macquin is fatter, sweeter, and riper, with its pronounced smoky oak component intertwined with jammy black-raspberry and curranty aromas and flavors. The wine's sweet fruit (from ripeness, not sugar), and concentrated, medium to full-bodied, low acid style, suggests early maturity, but the wine is still youthful and unevolved. While already delicious, this wine will benefit from another 2-3 years of cellaring. It will be at its peak between 2000-2008.

The palate is medium-bodied, beautifully balance and pure with polished, rounded tannins. Very supple and lithe with mint, macerated black cherries, dates, leading to a sleek, liquorice and peppermint infused finish. The Bin 90A is a very classy number and at 20-years young, just a pup. The wine is full-bodied, powerful, flamboyant, and showy. It is a decadent white Burgundy to drink over the next 5 years. The Domaine Jean-Marc Boillot in Pommard has emerged over the last few years as one of the up and coming stars, especially for white Burgundy. The 25 acres of vineyards are evenly split between Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, but Boillot has superb parcels in many of the top Puligny-Montrachet vineyards. The wines represent classic examples of white Burgundy, with good acid levels and terrific delineation and purity. I thought the 1994s to be the finest wines I have yet tasted from Boillot.

The 1994 Lafite may turn out to be austere and disappointing flavor-wise, but possesses a fabulous set of aromatics (does that sound reminiscent of the 1961, another Lafite that was primarily Cabernet Sauvignon?). Rolland's success has not come without a price, as he now must endure an unprecedented level of criticism from a whining group of underachievers that appears to have one complaint - Rolland produces better wine than they do. An exceptionally impressive wine, the 1995 Solengo (meaning, to go it alone) is a superb blend of Sangiovese and Syrah. The wine, which was aged in new French oak casks, boasts a dense, saturated ruby/purple color, as well as a stunning nose of blackcurrants, chocolate, smoke, and an elusive floral scent. Long, dense, and extravagantly rich, with full body and exceptional purity, this low acid yet fleshy, powerful, silky-textured wine impressively conceals some serious tannin. The wine is exceptionally rich and layered in the mouth, but unevolved, yet it possesses enormous potential. Approximately 1,500 cases were made of this wine, which will be released in September, 1997. It should improve for 5-10 years, and last for two decades. This is a brilliant wine!

An impressive Certan de May, the 1995 exhibits a dense ruby/purple color, and a moderately intense nose of black olives, cedar, raspberries, and cherry fruit intermixed with toasty new oak. In the mouth, the new oak is noticeable, as is an elevated level of tannin. Notwithstanding the aggressive vanillin flavors and powerful tannin, this wine has outstanding depth, and a layered, concentrated style with considerable muscle and power. It is a big, backward, formidably endowed Certan de May that may turn out to be the finest wine made at this estate since the 1988, but patience is most definitely required.

Darker red, but not especially saturated. Deeper, riper aromas of plum and framboise, with smoky oak and mint notes adding complexity; showed a note of surmaturite that reminded me of a Bonneau Chateauneuf du Pape. Fairly strong on the attack, then the richest and sweetest of these three vintages by a wide margin. Concentrated and firmly structured. Finishes with dusty, tactile tannins and assertive flavors of kirsch, coffee and olive.
