1997 Jadot Clos St Denis (750ml)

$145.00
Buy Now
Robert Parker 91-93
Jadot's 1997 Clos St.-Denis reveals a medium to dark ruby-color, as well as a nose presently dominated by grilled oak scents. This is a hugely powerful, expansive, thick, medium to full-bodied wine. Its baked blackberry, earth, and game-laden core leads to an exceptionally long, pure, and fresh finish. Projected maturity: 2002-2010+.
Allen Meadows, Burghound 89-92
A slightly more elegant and certainly spicier ripe blue and red berry fruit nose laced with ample amounts of warm earth that also characterizes the beautifully layered flavors that also possess a most beguiling texture that is at once firm but velvety, all wrapped in a finish that tightens up very quickly, indeed to the point that the tannins are on the chewy side. This is lovely but it doesn't have the same power and length as the Clos de la Roche.

Robert Parker 89-91
The black/purple-colored 1997 Clos de la Roche bursts from the glass with mocha and baked berry fruit aromas. This is a huge, thick, muscular wine with cocoa powder and blackberry jam flavors. Deep, intense, and chewy, this powerful offering also possesses an impressively long and fresh finish. Drink it between 2002 and 2012
Allen Meadows, Burghound 90-93
An intensely sauvage nose that remains fresh and bright but clearly with forest floor and game nuances that also run through the rich, full and seductively textured medium-bodied flavors that possess good power and weight on the dusty, mouth coating and impressively persistent finale. Lovely and while not a truly large-scaled Clos de la Roche, this definitely enjoys grand cru focus and punch.

"A surprising '97. Very dark, compacted and extracted, it offers an impressive focus of pure blackberry and red berry flavors dominated by cassis."
Steve Tanzer's International Wine Cellar
"Deep ruby-red. Very reduced on the nose. Great chocolatey richness in the mouth. An outsized, youthfully unevolved wine with huge tannic clout. Impressive but impossible to assess today. This was due for a racking."

Subtle aromas of spiced apple and pear, complicated by vanilla, smoke and nut skin nuances. Big, appley and quite dry; currently dominated by a strong cyanic character. Youthfully tough on the finish, but with noteworthy persistence. Will require several years of aging.

1997 Verget Chablis Valmur (750ml)

$95.00

Robert Parker 92-94
The Chablis Valmur has toasted hazelnut, eucalyptus, lemon, and stone-like aromas. It is big and delineated and has a velvety-textured, precise, and complex core of white/red berries intermingled with spiced pears and anise. It lasts long on the palate. This blockbuster is an extraordinary wine, in addition to offering further evidence of Guffens' brilliant winemaking skills. Drink it between 2001 and 2007+.

1997 Verget Meursault Charmes (750ml)

$75.00

Robert Parker 92-93
The magnificent Meursault Charmes Vieilles Vignes will provide consumers with years of pleasure. Its extremely expressive aromatics reveal earthy red fruit scents interspersed with new oak spices. On the palate, this full-bodied, broad, powerful, highly concentrated, and magnificently focused wine offers multiple dimensions of minerals, nuts, super-ripe apples, and grilled oak flavors. This huge, yet refined Meursault pleases the intellect with its purity and complexity, yet will also satisfy hedonists with its thick, chewy, and sultry depth of fruit.

1997 Verget Meursault Poruzots (750ml)

$75.00

Robert Parker 92-94
Verget's Meursault Poruzots is a work of art. Its drool-inducing nose of candied hazelnuts and lemons leads to a full-flavored and humongous personality densely packed with tropical fruits, and nuts. This wine is amazingly ripe yet has impeccable precision and balance, an anomaly given its oily, almost viscous texture. Many wines, tasted at this stage of their elevage, appear to be holding some of their components in reserve. This offering flaunts everything it has in an unabashedly sexy and voluptuous manner.

"Medium-full colour. Full, rich with a touch of oak on th enose. Plenty of depth. Full body. Good fruit. Not a bit over-done. Very good grip. This again is harmonious, classy, long and positive. Fine."
Fine Wine Review 90-93
"The Nuits-Boudots shows a nice complexity of black fruits that mix with oak, and round texture. I would sum this wine up with the word sensual."

Extremely ripe, indeed even notes of torrefaction and roast espresso beans precede big, robust, forceful austere black fruit flavors that have slightly drying tannins but not as much density and length as usual. Really quite regal but in more of a middle weight than its normal massive, well muscled and structured character. In short, this is classy, sappy and powerful with the same hint of reduction; again, decant first.

"Full medium red. Pure, complex, perfumed aromas of violet, gunflint, minerals, spices and earth. Sweet but light on its feet, lifted by a note of menthol. Quite youthfully unevolved, but finishes with noteworthy persistence."
Allen Meadows, Burghound 91
"Brooding, backward and quite a bit more reserved and less expressive with subtly spicy black fruit aromas trimmed by a subtle hint of oak and followed by restrained, pure, gorgeously sappy and harmonious, completely seductive flavors that offer the best delineation of any of these wines. This is extraordinarily fine and detailed with length that lasts and lasts. Though this will undoubtedly add weight and complexity, it will likely always be understated and refined rather than powerful. This is a simply sublime combination of spice, silk and velvet delivered in a perfect sphere of impeccable balance. Incredible by any standard but especially so for the vintage.

Allen Meadows, Burghound 92
Knockout sexy black fruit aromas trimmed in a deft touch of oak and distinct animale notes with expressive, full, pure, sweet and quite powerful flavors and a long, persistent, mouth coating finish. The amount of sève is impressive as is the sheer spiciness and this is a good deal more refined than it usually is. A great vintage for this wine.
Steve Tanzer's International Wine Cellar 92+
Good full red. Pure, highly perfumed aromas of cassis, licorice, minerals and flowers. Wonderfully precise and taut in the mouth, with lovely sweetness and terrific verve. A delicate musky quality adds to the wine's complexity. An uncommonly strong vintage for this wine, from a crop level of just 25 hectoliters per hectare.

Allen Meadows, Burghound 94
Wonderfully pure and ripe white flower fruit aromas are framed by a deft touch of oak that merge seamlessly into racy, intense, superbly dense flavors that display a good deal more minerality than usual and the incredibly long finish has the grip of a red. While this is a very rich wine, it is perhaps a bit less opulent than usual and I actually quite like the sense of linearity and racy finishing acidity. In this sense, the wine quite reminds me of the incredible '96.
Steve Tanzer's International Wine Cellar 94+
right, pale yellow-gold. Exotic orange peel and pineapple on the nose, along with lower-toned butterscotch, clove and coconutty oak. Powerfully minerally, firm in acidity and very tightly wound; comes across as drier and less silky than the young 2002. A very structured, chewy white Burgundy that offers an impressive combination of power and delicacy. This needs time!

Allen Meadows, Burghound 97
"Brooding, reserved, somewhat austere yet classic, picture perfect aromas of red and black fruits cut with almost as much spice and aromatic nuances as the La Tâche plus a subtle touch of earth, soy and hoisin that combine to create a bouquet of simply stunning complexity. The purity and detail are flat out incredible with nuanced, multi-layered flavors wrapped in pinot sap and culminating in an awe-inspiring finish. Silk, velvet and mouth coating sap completely buffer the ripe structure and this RC possesses what all of the great ones do - absolutely perfect harmony; this is seamless and there are no edges. It is as it were a perfect sphere with a haunting finish that I could taste hours later. This is destined to be a great wine.
Steve Tanzer's International Wine Cellar 96+
Medium-deep red. Utterly distinctive nose combines plum, redcurrant, beefsteak tomato, underbrush and grilled vegetables. Wonderfully silky and concentrated, without any rough edges. And yet this thick wine possesses terrific verve, purity and power. Expands inexorably in the middle palate and offers extraordinary building length on the aftertaste. The complex earthy/veggie element turns to rose petal with bottle age, notes de Villaine, adding that this cuvee is nearly always the highest in grape sugars and lowest in acidity among DRC's crus. A splendid wine with a great future. I would not want to touch any of these 2001s for at least a decade.
Neil Martin, Wine Journal, eRobert Parker 96-98
Compared to La Tache definitely a light colour. The nose has moderate intensity, again the oak not completely enmeshed into the fruit. Notes of espresso coffee like La Tache. The palate is very concentrated but not overpowering with well-knit tannins and delectable acidity. The mid-palate stays suspended on the palate: just pure pinot fruits. Good grip with a touch of black truffle on the finish. Magnificent. Better than La Tache this year. 10+ years. (533 cases produced) Tasted February 2004.

Big, rich and muscular yet this offers excellent definition with explosive fruit trimmed in obvious anise notes and luxuriant, sappy, dense flavors of uncommon depth and complexity. The finish is rather linear presently yet offers wave after wave of mouthwatering extract, all beautifully framed by more than sufficient buffering acidity. A Bâtard worthy of the name and a great success for the vintage.
Steve Tanzer's International Wine Cellar 92
Highly perfumed aromas of peach, nut oil and spring flowers. Thick and sappy, with youthfully clenched but highly concentrated fruit framed by harmonious acidity. Fat and creamy, but the wine's 2.2 grams per liter of residual sugar are well buffered by its firm minerality. Finishes chewy and long, with a distinct saline character. Showing well considering the recent bottling.

"Medium red. Blacker fruits on the nose, lifted by violet and mineral nuances. A step beyond the Echezeaux in sweetness, texture and power. Fuller and more complex, with sappy dark berries complicated by leather and minerals. Finishes with round, sweet tannins and excellent length."
Allen Meadows, Burghound 93
"It is immediately evident that this is a deeper and finer wine than the Echézeaux as there is another dimension here with sweet, pure and classic pinot fruit aromas enhanced by subtle nuances of floral flower notes, damp earth, underbrush and even a hint of game. The big, muscular but utterly refined flavors are superbly intense, reserved and backward supported by remarkably sophisticated tannins and stunning length. This is a very concentrated wine of real breed and impeccable balance that should age for 3 decades, perhaps longer."

Good deep, bright red. Dee p aromas of cherry, raspberry, minerals and Asian spices, lifted by a floral quality. Fat, sweet and full but lively; offers great volume without any undue weight. This shows exciting inner-palate energy and finishes with a sexy, deep core of spice. Very pretty, and very long. A superb showing today.
Pierre Rovani, Wine Advocate 93
Soy sauce, candied blood oranges, and dark cherries make up the nose of the outstanding 2002 La Tache. Extremely elegant and pure, this light to medium-bodied wine displays a superb satiny texture and a broad blackberry, black cherry, spice, and mineral-flavored character. It boasts a refined, noble personality with an exceedingly long, supple finish. The qualitative and ripeness differences between this wine and the Richebourg is striking as well as confounding.
Wine Spectator 96
Limpid garnet. Absolutely stunning aromas of pure cherry, strawberry and raspberry mark this La Tâche. It's vibrant, balanced and very elegant, with ripe fruit and tannins and a long finish. Very promising future.
Allen Meadows, Burghound 96
This is still rather reserved though determined swirling reveals a nose that is exceptionally fine and pure with fantastic aromatic detail and an almost diaphanous transparency of expression that reveals all of the kaleidoscopic La Tâche spice box nose, including anise, clove, plums, high-toned black cherry, crushed red raspberry and more. The broad, expansive and powerful flavors are still on the strict side with a mid-palate of massive depth yet the finish is round, generous, sappy and superbly complex culminating in a finish that lasts for minutes. Despite the aromatic fireworks and opulent character, there is an underlying tenderness here that suggests that this will be approachable relatively early but the balance is so fine that this should easily age for 30 years, perhaps longer. Tasted thrice recently with consistent notes. 96/2020+

Young Romanée-Conti is rarely expressive yet this is as aromatically expressive as the Echézeaux with a gentle touch of wood framing stunningly spicy dark cherry and plum aromas that pull you into the wine with its seductive grace and purity followed by sweet, understated and vibrant medium full flavors that display the best acid/fruit balance of any wine here. This is dense, forceful and long with perhaps more sheer size and muscle than is typical yet the purity of expression and astonishing length is something to behold. But ultimately, just like the La Tâche, what sets this apart from all the others is not its power, not its richness and not its complexity but rather its completeness. There is a serenity here that cannot be duplicated and must be experienced to really be believed. A great wine by any measure and one that will also be capable of aging with poise for decades.

"Very good deep red-ruby. Very ripe aromas of raspberry, earth, Oriental spices, truffle and smoke; shows a slight suggestion of surmaturite but at the same time is perked up by a suggestion of menthol. Then sweet and supple, with very good definition and a light touch for 2003. Finishes with big tannins and impressive density and length."
Robert Parker 95
"Perhaps the biggest Romanee-St.-Vivant produced at this domaine, the 2003 offers aromatics as well as flavors reminiscent of black fruits drenched in dark chocolate. Full-bodied, velvety-textured, as well as concentrated, it is immensely ripe, crammed with tannin, and vaunts an amazingly long finish."
Allen Meadows, Burghound 94
"In contrast to the aromatic explosiveness of the Grands Ech, this is a good deal more reserved but much more elegant with floral and subtle spice notes adding nuance to the upper register ripe black fruit aromas that are clearly pinot in basic character. The flavors aren't as big or muscular as the Grands but there is better precision, elegance and purity here with strikingly complex and refined flavors that are supple on the mid-palate but quite firm on the finish. There is the barest trace of warmth but it's a background note and this is superbly classy juice. The '01 RSV laid to rest the now dated notion that this wine isn't at the same level as the rest of the range here and this hammers home the point with authority. A great wine of enormous class and style and it is perhaps the freshest wine in the range in 2003."

"Toast, minerals, pears, and hints of citrus fruits make up the aromatic profile of the 2003 Chassagne-Montrachet La Romanee (white). This excellent, refined wine is one of the two whites Dancer acidified (the other is the village Chassagne). "Notes of ripe plum, mocha, dark pinot fruit, earth, spice, a bit of wood and wet leather make for a potent and highly expressive nose that complements the massive, incredibly powerful and long flavors that have simply unbelievable intensity and that lovely natural sweetness of the finest burgundies. The flavors just explode in the mouth, displaying wonderful inner mouth perfume and dazzling texture and this literally lingers for minutes. This will one day be a monument and it will need years before it's completely ready so be prepared to have plenty of patience."
Steve Tanzer's International Wine Cellar 93+
Deep medium red. Wild, very reduced nose offers raspberry, mocha and flowers. Dense and thick but initially mute owing to the reduction; obviously huge, broad, chewy and rich. Finishes with very sweet, thoroughly buffered tannins and hints of spices and blood orange. I followed this wine for 72 hours as it slowly absorbed oxygen. By day three it was a deep ruby-red color and showed spectacular aromas of black raspberry, strawberry, mocha and minerals, and a compelling velvety texture achieved by very few 2003s, with no lack of underlying acidity. While superripe it is not at all cooked, and it shed 90% of its reductive quality. But this will require at least a decade of cellaring.

"This is the first wine to display any wood at all as subtle oak spice frames somber red and black fruit aromas that are ripe but unquestionably pinot-based. The earthy, dense, concentrated and powerful flavors stain and coat the palate with copious amounts of extract and real punch. Like so many of this group, this isn't elegant but again, its got excellent depth of material."
Wine Spectator 91
"A mix of freshness and ripe black cherry and blackberry aromas and flavors mark this intense, muscular Pommard. Dense with fruit and tannins, they meet on the long finish. This needs time. Drink now through 2020."

A focused beam, this white wraps its lime, mineral, apple and vanilla notes around a core of bracing acidity. Has intensity and balance, yet this is firm and crisp on the finish for now, with real stony length. Best from 2010 through 2030.
Allen Meadows, Burghound 93
Now that this is in bottle, it's even better than I originally thought with a still reserved yet elegant nose of white flower, green apple, pear and natural spice and wet stone notes that introduce detailed, fresh and wonderfully intense flavors that are exceptionally clean and bright, culminating in a bone dry finish replete with superb minerality. This is not as dense as the '05 but the purity here is really something to see and as noted last year, it's sufficiently structured that it will need the better part of a decade to reach its apogee. Note that there was a trace of reduction on the nose and this would benefit from 30 minutes in a decanter should you elect to try one anytime soon.

Medium red. Rather exotic aromas of liqueur-like red fruits, spices, leather and underbrush. Silky, seductive and a bit decadent in its early sex appeal, but with its lively acids and apparent oak tannins this has a slight dry edge. Firmed up with air and gained in freshness.

Pure, fine fruits along the line of raspberry and dark plums-there's almost a dancing quality to this wine, with its freshness and lightness, with acidity and red currants giving the most delicate of finishing touches.

Good deep red. Less expressive but still utterly sexy nose offers plum, raspberry, flowers, smoke and earth. Hints at its superb volume but this is quite closed and tightly knit today, and much less expressive and sweet than La Tache. But this superconcentrated wine seemed to gain sweetness with aeration, showing an increasingly fat, seamless texture without any loss of energy as it opened in the glass. Really saturates the palate on the aftertaste, where the tannins are thoroughly buffered by the wine's strong extract and superb depth.

tTis wine's considerable power derives from its solid texture, its multifaceted red-berry flavors, juiciness, freshness and perfect balancing acidity. You can, and you will want to, hold tis in the mouth for many minutes. It is a complete wine.
