| "This is a great Haut Brion. This rich, luxurious wine has an intense, earthy, ripe, cedary, spicy bouquet crammed with sweet fruit. On the palate, the wine has fabulous intensity of fruit, a long rich, alcoholic finish, and a chewy texture." | |||||
| Clive Coates 19/20 | |||||

| Robert Parker 100 | |||||
| This is unquestionably one of the greatest wines made in the twentieth century. In the two dozen tastings where I have had the 1961 La Chapelle, I rated it 100 points twenty times. The opaque purple/garnet color is accompanied by spectacular aromatics representing the essence of old vine Syrah (smoked meat, pepper, hoisin sauce, and soy). As the wine sits in the glass, notions of pepper, new saddle leather, grilled meat, and awesome levels of blackberry, plum, and black currant liqueur-like notes emerge. Extremely unctuous, with compelling concentration and purity, this full-bodied, seamless, mouthfilling 1961 is truly immortal. It still possesses a freshness and vigor that defy its nearly forty years of age. It should continue to drink well for two more decades. Prodigious stuff! | |||||

| Superb conditions throughout the region, Hermitage said to be the best of the century. La Chapelle now virtually priceless. | |||||

| Pontet-Canet produced a great 1961, although a distressingly high incidence of variation as a result of the numerous English bottlings is undoubtedly a problem. The best bottles exhibit rich, deep color, with a full-blown, ripe, deep bouquet of spices and plums, viscous, round, supple flavors, and the sumptuous length that typify this great vintage. Now fully mature, the good examples of this wine will last a decade. Certainly the best Pontet-Canet I have ever tasted. The wine performed splendidly at a vertical tasting at Pontet-Canet in 1990. | |||||

| Extremely impressive, with beautifully balanced, harmonious sweet fruit on the palate. Medium ruby-red, ripe cherry and cassis aromas, medium-bodied, with rich, velvety fruit flavors, full, soft tannins and a powerful finish. (JS) | |||||

| Masses of rich plums and prunes on the flavour. So rich-such a surprise. Big wine. This is a great Warre and should not be missed whenever it appears. | |||||

| It wasgood I 1972 but I felt it could do with more bottle age. Indeed, in 1982 it seemed to have developed more ethereal fragrance; on the palate ambrosial raisins.. | |||||

| This full-bodied, sweet dessert wine, with its lovely amber color, is rich and voluptuous, with beautiful texture, loads of maple, honey and spice flavors, caramel notes that linger on the finish, and a nice, smoky, oxidized quality overall. It's balanced, and elegant, too. | |||||

| A healthy dark ruby color suggested a youthful wine. The tight, uncomplicated nose of wood and ripe fruit left me searching for more nuances and complexity. This lean, medium-bodied, admirably concentrated, foursquare-styled Vega Sicilia can be drunk now or cellared for another 10 years. I do not see it evolving into anything more than an above average quality wine. | |||||

| ..another beauty, backed up with dozens of admiring notes..Eleven bottles decanted and consumed at the great dinner to clebrate the 30th anniversary of Christie's wine department: sheer perfection. | |||||
| Wine Spectator 93 | |||||
| Elegant, silky and youthful, this is a sexy wine. Medium ruby-red, showing aromas of plums, chocolate and ripe fruit. The palate follows through with a bounty of sweet plum flavors and a fleshy mouth-feel. It should continue to improve with age. | |||||

| Full mature colour. Very fine classy nose. This has excellent ripe fruit. There is even an element of the super creamy concentration you only usually fin in the 1961s. Full, concentrated, structured, lovely balance. Excellent fruit. A point now. Saint-Julian and Cabernet Sauvignon in all its glorious breed. Very complex long finish. Very fine indeed. | |||||
| Robert Parker 89 | |||||
| This may be the most successful wine produced by this estate during the decade of the sixties, although some bottles of the 1962 come close to offering as much pleasure as the 1966. The wine may have turned the corner and begun its decline. I have never tasted it out of larger format bottles, but I suspect magnums of this wine might merit an outstanding evaluation. The wine has always been a classic Bordeaux, with more fruit and body than many 1966s. There is a degree of austerity, but the wine's dominant characteristics include a complex, tobacco, cedar, and red currant-scented nose, medium body, excellent concentration and ripeness, and a spicy, long, moderately tannic finish. Drink it up as it is unlikely to improve. | |||||
| Neil Martin, Wine Journal, eRobert Parker 91 | |||||
| Poured blind by Jean-Hubert Delon at the château over lunch and then two months later at the vertical in London. Similar nose of both: leafy with touches of dried figs, earth and fresh tobacco. I felt that the sample in London showed a little more volatility, the one in Bordeaux medium-bodied with vibrant acidity with notes of sour cherry, forest floor, tobacco and a touch of greenness just poking through on the finish. I think the apogee for this wine was 5-6 years ago, but now it is fading slowly and graceful. Drink now. Tasted October 2007. | |||||

| Robert Parker 96 | |||||
| "The 1966 Palmer continues to be one of the greatest examples of Palmer I have ever tasted. The haunting bouquet is similar to that already found in the 1961, and those that with more cellaring will undoubtedly develop in the 1970 and 1983. It has a plummy, mulberry-like fruitness, exotic spices, licorice, and a hint of truffles. Medium bodied, with a velvety richness, it has a long, ripe, lush finish, and enough grip and focus to drink well for another decade." | |||||
| Wine Spectator 96 | |||||
| "Extraordinary. The bouquet is complex and exotic, with aromas of wild game, truffles and spice. Silky and firm on the palate, it's expressive and long, with enough raisin and cherry flavors to match the meat, tobacco and spice notes. This is why wine is aged." | |||||
| Clive Coates 19 | |||||
| "Marvellous intensity and depth and substance on nose and palate. Indeed the nose evolved and improved in the glass. A wine of real concentration and power. Totally brilliant." | |||||

| Fullish mature colour. Very good nose. This has balance and depth and rather more style than the 1970. Fullish, complex, generous, classy. Round, fullish, harmonious and still with vigor. Very good indeed. Lovely finish. | |||||
| Neil Martin, Wine Journal, eRobert Parker 92 | |||||
| A bottle served blind at the pre-Xmas lunch chez the Good Bishop Gill. A deep garnet core with a thin brick rim. The nose is quintessential ¿66, masculine, a touch lean, hints of green leaves but on this bottle, great definition and vibrancy and definitely Pauillac. Cedar developing and then some iodine. The palate is medium-bodied with vibrant acidity, traditional claret at its best. Not complex, but very focused with slight abrasive tannins. Linear, yet wonderfully balanced with good ripeness on the leafy finish. Certainly a classy ¿66 at its peak. Very lovers of classic claret. Drink now-2015. Tasted December 2007 | |||||

| Fuul, vigorous colour. Just a touch dense on the nose but mellow, rich and 'old viney' underneath. Fullish, just a little over-macerated and old-fashioned. But the fruit is very good and balanced. Lacks just a little class. Slight astringent at the end. | |||||

| ..it is close to perfection. Medium amber/golden, with a full-intensity bouquet of vanillin spice, honey, ripe pineapples, and coconut, this intense, very ripe, unctuous Yquem has layers of sweet, oulent fruit, excellent balance, and a hefty, powerful finish | |||||
| Wine Spectator 100 | |||||
| From one of the 20th century's celebrated vintages for Yquem, this bottle stands up to all the hype--unforgettable for its purity, elegance, harmony, its "total" everything. Powerful, yet it seems weightless on the palate, almost defying gravity as it tangos around with its vanilla, peach and apricot flavors. Seamless, nearly endless finish. Easy to understand its reputation as the greatest Yquem of the last 35 years. | |||||

| A surprisingly fresh nose of spice and earth combines with medium weight, racy, pure, detailed flavors that deliver plenty of finishing richness and overall finesse, all wrapped in a touch of backend structure. This is drinking perfectly now and was decidedly better than expected as several prior bottles were only good if not better.. | |||||
