Proprietor Alain Vauthier has produced a prodigious wine that captures the essence of Ausone's terroir. A saturated black/purple color is followed by sensational aromas of ink, cherries, blackberries, blueberries, and that wet stones/liquid minerality characteristic. The wine has phenomenal presence on the palate as well as astonishing richness and purity. Despite its extract, power, and richness, it is remarkably light, with a surreal delicacy. It is a tour de force in winemaking and a compelling expression of this magical terroir. It should prove to be legendary, but sadly, anyone over the age of 50 will probably not live to see it come close to maturity. Anticipated maturity: 2020-2075.

This the greatest Beau Sejour-Becot I have ever tasted. The opaque purple 2000 has put on weight during its elevage and, from the bottle, appears to be spectacular. The wood is well-integrated, and the fruit, glycerin, and overall flavor dimensions are noteworthy. The bouquet smells of ink, espresso, jammy blackberries and currants, wet stones, and licorice. Super-pure and fabulously extracted, with high tannin, full body, a thick texture, and awesome richness and length, this blockbuster effort will be at its finest between 2008-2025.

Undeniably the most complete Beausejour Duffau since the mythical 1990, the black/purple-colored 2000 exhibits a port-like bouquet of licorice, blackberry liqueur, minerals, blueberries, camphor, and melted asphalt. Medium rather than full-bodied, it has a multi-layered texture in addition to gorgeous ripeness. While it is not as rich or super-concentrated as the colossal 1990, the 2000 still merits significant interest. Pure, complex, and reasonably priced, it will be at its apogee between 2013-2025+.

I often lament the fact that only the 1990 and 2009 are wines that fully showcase this extraordinary terroir. However, the 2000 is no 'Ugly Betty,' so to speak. It showed extremely well in the tastings, with the tell-tale notes of flowers, crushed rock, blueberry and camphor well-displayed. Full-bodied, rich, long, and just beginning to shed its cloak of tannin, this is quite an impressively endowed Beausejour-Duffau that can be drunk in 1-2 years or cellared for another 25 or more.

Bellevue's debut vintage under the collaboration of Bordeaux wunderkind Nicolas Thienpont and Stephane Derenoncourt is a whopper. A blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc from low yields of 30 hectoliters per hectare, this wine boasts an opaque inky purple color as well as a glorious perfume of blackberries and blueberries underlaid with a striking minerality, full body, high tannin, abundant glycerin, concentration, and muscle, and a 40-second finish. Will it shut down? I kept a bottle open eight days without any oxidation. A tour de force! Anticipated maturity: 2005-2020.

This was the breakthrough vintage for this fabulous terroir that had been under-exploited for so many years. A collaboration between Nicolas Thienpont and Stephane Derenoncourt, this medium to full-bodied, pure blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc reveals aromas reminiscent of a liqueur of crushed rocks, black currants, and raspberries. The tannins are still present, and the wine is firmer than I expected, but it is loaded. Made in a distinctive, singular, elegant style, it will be even better in 5-6 years, and should last for two decades thereafter - longer than I originally predicted. June 2010

Excellent saturated ruby. Sappy, liqueur-like aromas of black raspberry, crushed raw cassis and espresso. Dense, bright and concentrated, with lovely verve giving the dark berry flavors a lightness of touch. The liqueur-like quality continues in the mouth. As ripe and dense as this is, it conveys an impression of finesse and balance rather than sheer weight. Really classic St. Emilion. Finishes quite long, with ripe, smooth tannins.

Surprisingly, the 2000 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Vieilles Vignes is even bigger and more powerful (15.5% alcohol) than the 2001. One of the classics of the vintage, it boasts a dense purple color as well as a fantastic nose of kirsch liqueur, blackberries, blueberries, and flowers. It possesses a fabulous multi layered texture, admirable purity, and a 50-55 second finish. In spite of its power, high levels of glycerin, and lofty alcohol, there is a sense of elegance and lightness that is uncanny for a wine of this depth and richness. Anticipated maturity: now-2018. The Cuvee Vieilles Vignes is fashioned primarily from 80-year old Grenache (95% of the blend), and 5% Mourvedre, all from the rock-strewn sector of Chateauneuf du Pape called Le Crau. Half of the cuvee is destemmed, and it is given such progressive techniques as pigeage, with malolactic done in foudre, and 10% new oak barrels utilized in its upbringing. Michel Maret is one of the new stars of the southern Rhone. I am glad to see his wines properly represented in the United States.

This flamboyant, dense, opaque purple-colored wine, made from a blend of 67% Cabernet Sauvignon and 33% Merlot, is muscular, with an unctuous texture and high levels of tannin as well as extract. Compared to its other sibling in the Mouton-Rothschild stable, d'Armailhac, it is far more closed and tannic but still somewhat ostentatious, with smoky, leathery notes intermixed with oodles of black fruits and spice box. The wine may, however, have trouble eclipsing the brilliant 2001. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2020.

A beautiful wine and one of my favorites from this estate, this blend of nearly two-thirds Cabernet Sauvignon and one-third Merlot is aging impressively. Dense ruby/purple in color, with creme de cassis, charcoal, and sweet leathery and chocolatey notes intermixed with the classic Pauillac cedar and spice box, the wine is medium to full-bodied, fleshy, with sweet tannin and a long finish. It seems to have inched into its window of full drinking maturity, and will stay there for 10-15+ years.

The proprietors are extremely happy with what they were able to produce in 2000. Even though this vintage has a poor reputation, producers who only included the early-picked grapes in their final blends have often turned out nearly exceptional wines. Yields for the 2000 Climens were microscopic (four hectoliters per hectare) and the wine, although somewhat monolithic (I tasted it right after bottling), exhibits honeyed citrus, pineapple, and hints of pears, butter, and honeysuckle. Medium-bodied and elegant, with superb purity (a hallmark of this great estate), it should be at its finest between 2007-2020.

Tasted four times from bottle (two were corked), this wine is somewhat monolithic, but there is a lot going on, hence the high score. Its youthful disjointedness is certainly a thing of the past, as the wine now exhibits a saturated ruby/purple color and a pure nose of Asian spices intermixed with smoky black currant, raspberry, and blueberry notes with some wood in the background. The wine is full-bodied, pure, sweet, and dense, with a multi-layered texture. There is plenty of tannin in the finish, but it is largely concealed by impressive quantities of extract and fruit. Certainly this is the finest Clinet made under the relatively new administration of Jean-Louis Laborde. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2020+.

My favorite 2000 here is the proprietary red, the 2000 Cariad, a 650-case blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Petit Verdot. This is Colgin¿s California version of St.-Emilion. All the fruit comes from David Abreu¿s Madrona Ranch except for the Petit Verdot, which comes from Thorevilos. The dense ruby/purple-colored 2000 Cariad offers up a flamboyant nose of creosote, tobacco leaf, roasted coffee, chocolate, smoke, and earthy black currant as well as blackberry fruit. With great complexity, a firm, structured, tannic underpinning, medium to full body, and dazzling purity, this terrific 2000 is unquestionably one of the wines of the vintage. So we come to the millennial Château d'Issan 2000 and this is the first serious wine that portends a convincing return to form, a wine aspiring to be one of the best in Margaux. The nose is complex and takes time to unfurl, with notes of cedar and autumn bonfire inflecting the ripe black fruits and later, something a little more exotic like mandarin and even mango. The palate is very well balanced, more assertive than previous vintage and yet maintaining the finesse and elegance that is fundamental to the Appéllation.

Austere/astringent tannin in the finish held my score down.
