The VIP Circle for January is a great pair of wines that are excellent for braving the toils and tribulations of winter. A nicely aged vintage port and a hearty Bordeaux to drive away the chills and winter doldrums.
Our February Wines:
2004 Dujac, Morey St. Denis
Located in the Cote de Nuits, Morey St. Denis produces both red and white wines. Red is by far the most prevalent with more than 95 percent of the wine produced being such. Morey St.Denis sits neatly between Gevrey-Chambertin and Chambolle-Musigny, yet has little of the renown of those villages. Because Morey is still a much smaller appellation than its neighbors, it offers tremendous value in terms of not only price, but of quality versus the neighboring Gevrey plain, which is significantly higher priced. In the book Inside Burgundy, Laurent Ponsot "suggested that the hallmark of Morey is balance, avoiding excesses in any direction."
2003 Louis Latour, Pommard Epenots
Located in the Cote de Beaune, the village of Pommard is situated between Volnay to the South and Beaune to the North. The wines of Pommard can only be red with no white wines being produced. The "Les Epenots" vineyard consists of two parcels : "Les Petits Epenots" and "Les Grands Epenots". They are situated in the northern part of the commune, bordering Beaune. Pommard wines are typically among the most powerful of the Cote de Beaune wines.

Over the next months, VIP Circle members will be receiving:
February 2012:
2003 Louis Latour Pommard Les Epenots, Red Burgundy
List Price: $85.00
Allen Meadows, Burghound 89
"This is the first wine to display any wood at all as subtle oak spice frames somber red and black fruit aromas that are ripe but unquestionably pinot-based. The earthy, dense, concentrated and powerful flavors stain and coat the palate with copious amounts of extract and real punch. Like so many of this group, this isn't elegant but again, its got excellent depth of material."
2004 Dujac Morey St Denis
, Red Burgundy
List Price: $90.00
Steve Tanzer's International Wine Cellar 89
"Reticent nose hints at briary dark berries and mocha. A step up in density and sweetness from the village wines, with suppler flavors of musky dark berries, dark chocolate and minerals. Distinctly less peppery. Finishes with riper tannins and very good length."
March 2012:
2000 Beausejour Duffau, Red Bordeaux
List Price: $136.00
Robert Parker 92
"Undeniably the most complete Beausejour Duffau since the mythical 1990, the black/purple-colored 2000 exhibits a port-like bouquet of licorice, blackberry liqueur, minerals, blueberries, camphor, and melted asphalt. Medium rather than full-bodied, it has a multi-layered texture in addition to gorgeous ripeness. While it is not as rich or super-concentrated as the colossal 1990, the 2000 still merits significant interest. Pure, complex, and reasonably priced, it will be at its apogee between 2013-2025+.
2003 Ramey Jericho Canyon Vineyard California, Cabernet
List Price: $82.00
Robert Parker 93
The 2003 Jericho Canyon, from a 40-acre parcel of vines at the base of Mount St. Helena, is a blend of 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, and 3% Cabernet Franc. This is David Ramey's homage to Pauillac. With a big sweet nose of white chocolate, creme de cassis, cedar, spice box, and high-quality smoky oak, it is full-bodied, rich, and tannic with notes of chocolate and espresso in the mouth. This wine also needs several years of cellaring and should last 15-20 years.
April 2012:
1990 Le Bon Pasteur, Red Bordeaux
List Price: $120.00
Robert Parker 91
"Fully mature, the 1990 Bon Pasteur offers up aromas of mocha, caramel, spice box, ripe plums, and hints of figs as well as black cherries. Soft, creamy, expansive, sexy, and fleshy, it should hold at this plateau for another 5-10 years. June 2009"
1997 Tessier Meursault Genevrieres, White Burgundy
Sale Price: $62.10
Fine Wine International
"Hazelnut, pear, mineral and toasty notes, along with a long complex finish, combine to make this a classic example of Meursault at its best."
