| The Tokaji Aszu Essencia is the wine of legends. Made from super-concentrated botrytisized grapes, the Essencia is only made in exceptional years. Because of its high concentration of sugar it can take years to ferment. The alcohol is a very modest 8.5%. It can age almost indefinitely. The just released 1995 most be tasted to be belived. The wine is thick, unctuous but not in the least cloying thanks to the the acidity of the Fermint grape. The aromas and flavors combine peach, apricot, quince, orange, raisin, honey, and fig. The finish lingers on the palate for minutes. If you were down to your last sip of wine...this is the one you would want. | |||||

| Thick and dense yet never heavy, with aromas that flit from floral and vegetal to caramel and smoke and back again. There's noticeable sweetness matched by a brisk acidity that need time to integrate. Fine, lingering finish. Seems monolithic today, so be patient. | |||||

| "This famed Hungarian dessert wine never disappoints. An elegant nose of honey, apricot, butterscotch and spice is followed by a luxuriant, mouth-coating wave of satiny honey and apricot flavors, balanced by citrusy acidity. Complex, perfectly poised, it?s a wine with both pedigree and charm?delicious when sipped alone or paired with a mild Roquefort or fruit." | |||||

| Straw, melon and spice notes mingle with the rich texture and moderate structure. There's a hint of oak, and this picks up a light bitterness on the finish. | |||||

| This lively, dry white from Hungary starts with aromas of apple, oaky spice and citrus, leading in to balanced fruit flavors with a toasty vanilla edge. Smooth but spunky, the wine ends with a good spicy finish. | |||||

| It is not surprising that when they turned their attention to dry wine, their 2006 Furmint would be worthy of wine lovers? attention. Pineapple, lime zest, musky flowers, and wood smoke scent the nose. On the palate, this displays the phenolic cut and refreshing citricity as well as the subtly bitter oiliness common to virtually all Furmint. But there is a satisfying sheer juiciness here that allows the bitter-sweet nutty and zesty side of the variety to add complexity rather than dominate the proceedings. Enjoy this distinctive and intensely-flavored wine over the coming year, particularly in strongly herbal, citric, or charred and grilled food contexts. Royal Tokaji was also long reluctant to bottle nobly sweet wine of less than Tokaji Aszu concentration, even as many of their neighbors were leaning heavily on such ?late-harvest? (but not official Aszu) cuvees. | |||||
