| This south-facing hillside vineyard planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Agliano vines averaging 30 years, is one of the greatest discoveries I have made (actually, the importer deserves the credit, I just do the tasting). - According to Silvia, this is one of the best years. There was rain until May but then at the end of August and early September conditions were fine. Unusual nose with an olive/tapenade character and a methylated spirits lift. The palate is tarry and spicy with rich, ripe fruit, good acidity and an almost soft-cheese edge. | |||||
1997 Falesco Montiano (750ml) |
$85.00
|
||||
| Robert Parker 95 | |||||
| Proprietor Riccardo Cotarella's 1997 Montiano vino da tavola (100% Merlot, bottled unfined and unfiltered after spending 12 months in new French oak) is fabulous. It displays multiple layers that build in the mouth, exploding at the back of the palate. From its opaque purple color, the huge sweet notes of chocolate, smoke, black fruits, and toast satiate the olfactory senses, yet please the mind's intellectual yearnings. Pure and powerful, yet brilliantly knit together with no hard edges and no sense of high alcohol or heaviness, this sensational wine is one of the finest Merlots made in Italy. | |||||
1998 Montevetrano Colli di Salerno (750ml) |
$80.00
|
||||
| Wine Spectator 90 | |||||
| Dark ruby in color, with aromas of currants, berries and tar. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins and a long, berry, vanilla aftertaste. Needs time to come together. Another gorgeous red from Montevetrano, though not as great as the '97. Best after 2002. | |||||
| Robert Parker 92 | |||||
| I have been extolling the virtues of this wine, produced in partnership with the owner Silvia Imparato and consulting oenologist Riccardo Cotarella, for nearly a decade. I love its individualistic style. Each year, regardless of vintage conditions, it offers up compelling amounts of blueberry, blackberry, and black raspberry fruit presented in a distinctive, medium to full-bodied, fruit-driven, complex personality. It also exhibits a touch of minerals, marvelous purity and symmetry, as well as the potential for 10-20 years of evolution. The 1998 is an outstanding success, with elegance allied to power and intensity. Montevetrano's hallmark blackberry and black raspberry component is present as well as beautiful purity/symmetry, and a long, medium to full-bodied, highly-concentrated finish. Sadly, production is a mere 2,000 bottles from a 4-acre vineyard planted in 1991 with 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, and 10% Aglianico. Like most of the wines made under the supervision of Riccardo Cotarella, it is aged in new French oak, and bottled with neither fining nor filtration. The 1998 should drink well for 10-15 years. | |||||

| "The compelling 1999 Campoleone was aged in 100% new French oak and bottled without fining or filitration by oenologist Riccardo Cotarella. A dense opaque purple color is accompanied by scents of new saddle leather, blackberry and cassis fruit, licorice, roasted meats, and graphite. Full-bodied and sweet, with a fabulous texture, ripe tannin, adequate acidity, and brilliant definition, this is a tour de force in wine making." | |||||

| Falesco's top offering is a 100% barrique-aged Merlot, the 2000 Montiano. While it may not equal the quality of the 1999 or 1997, it comes close. The 2000 boasts an opaque purple color in addition to a sumptuous perfume of graphite, blackberries, currants, licorice, and subtle pain grille notes. With great depth, full body, sweet tannin, and a long, layered, elegant finish, it should drink well between 2005-2020. Bravo! | |||||

| One of the most spectacular wines made in Italy, this unfined/unfiltered, Merlot/Sangiovese blend (about 3,400 cases produced) boasts an extraordinary perfume of saddle leather, smoke, cassis, prunes, and plums. Rich, full-bodied, and voluptuously-textured, with layers of concentrated fruit, a magnificent seamlessness, and a huge, explosive finish, it should drink well for 10-15 years. It is a wine of great stature as well as intensity. | |||||
2000 Mastroberardino Taurasi Radici (750ml) |
$40.00
|
||||
| Wine- Maker Notes | |||||
| Taurasi, one of Italy's most admired and well-known red wines, is derived from the late-ripening Aglianico grape, a variety that has existed southern Italy for over 2,000 years. Taurasi has become a pretigious symbol of Irpinian viticulture, known for its capacity to age, as well as powerful structure and aromatic concentration.
Mastroberardino's single-vineyard Radici Taurasi made its debut in 1986. Varietal Composition: 100% Aglianico. Named Radici (root), as a reference to the family's 300-year winemaking history, this wine is the result of the Mastroberardino family's careful study of Irpinia's terroir over the years.
Radici Taurasi is a full, ruby red wine with an intense bouquet reminiscent of violets and berries. Elegant and smooth, this wine also displays distinct flavors of plum, bitter cherry, strawberry jam and black pepper. Serve Radici with roasted meats or venison, spicy dishes and a variety of mature cheeses.

| The 2001 Serpico, impenetrable and inky, staggeringly rich in both aroma and flavor, offers ultra-ripe but perfectly fresh berry fruit, cloves, cinnamon, and chocolate, and mouth-coating, deep-pile tactile sensations which combine iron power and a enveloping, voluptuous texture, infinitely deep and long. I would be amazed if this wine did not last thirty years. | |||||

2001 Sartori Roccolo Grassi Valpolicella (750ml) |
$35.00
|
||||
| FineWine International | |||||
| Roccolo Grassi is the name of Bruno Sartori's most important vineyard. It is also the name of the estate. Sharing the same blend and vineyard as their Amarone, the Roccolo Grassi is , however, produced differently than the Amarone. The method used is the now well-known ripasso method, whereby the a part of the finished wine is passed over the Amarone lees where it stays for seven days beginning a secondary fermentation. The result is a Valpolicello with more depth, intensity and aging potential. The previous vintage received 2 glasses from the Gambero Rosso Guide and we think the 2001 vintage surpasses the 2000. | |||||

| Recent archeological excavations and botanical studies of Pompeii by the Soprintendenza Archeologica di Pompeii have uncovered remains of vine roots and supporting stakes preserved by the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius, which buried the city in 79 AD.
In 1996, the Soprintendenza authorized Mastroberardino to reintroduce vineyards to the ancient city. In 1999, after experimenting with eight grape varieties that were used by the Romans to produce wines thousands of years ago, two red varieties were identified as best-suited for the site, Piedirosso and Sciascinoso. Subsequently, five vineyards, covering a total of 2.5 acres, were planted within the city walls to 85% Piedirosso and 15% Sciascinoso.
Mastroberardino's Villa dei Misteri (Villa of Mysteries) is named after one of over a hundred ancient villas in the Vesuvian area. The villa was built in the 2nd century BC as a vacation home for the upper class, and includes a main house overlooking the ocean and a servants' quarters next to the wine rooms. Here, painted on the dining room walls, is a large fresco depicting what was a mysterious ritual at the time of a woman's initiation into marriage. The label on Mastroberardino's Villa dei Misteri features scenes from this beautifully vibrant fresco.
It is our humble homage to a site which is part of the heritage of the entire world. Vine growing began here, and here, after 2000 years, we once more propose a wine made in Pompeii. Antonio Mastroberardino

| Lamborghini's Campoleone, a sangiovese-merlot blend from the Trasimeno hills, is a wine of pedigree which, like all thoroughbreds, can perform erratically, There's genius on the one hand and decadence on the other. When the year is right, the wine has few equals and goes beyond being impressive to take you by storm, and sometimes even knock you sideways. ..the '04 Campoleone is a deep ruby colour. The nose has extreme complexity and refinement, with small red and black berry fruit, nuances of new oak and swaths of balsam, all of which continually alternative and intermingle, to glorious effect. The palate is full of flesh, showing vibrant and deeply fruity, with a superb tannic weave. It has a clear stamp of Bordeaux about it. | |||||
| Robert Parker 92 | |||||
| The 2004 Campoleone, the estate¿s signature wine, is simply gorgeous. This blend of equal parts Sangiovese and Merlot spent 12 months in French oak. It is a firmly structured wine with superb density on the palate, where layers of tobacco, dark cherries, earthiness, smoke, licorice and toasted oak all come to life. The tannins finish slightly dry and astringent, likely a result of an overly exuberant use of French oak. Still, this is a beautifully delineated, focused Campoleone. Antonio Galloni | |||||
