| Gambero Rosso 2* | |||||
| "If we had been going to award a special prize for the best cellar in Montalcino this year, then we might very well have plumped for Tenuta Col d'Orcia, above all because of two excellent wines that demonstrate just how dependable the marvellous estate has become?...This wine has always shone like a beacon to lovers of great traditional-style Brunello, but the '90 is in a class of its own. The nose is more concentrated, with greater breadth and intensity and a range of aromas which takes you from ripe fruit to flowery notes and hints of cocoa and oak. The entry on the palate is even more positive than usual and the flavours are so full and lingering that they came out of a parallel tsting against Giovanni Cnterno's legendary Barolo Montfortino Riserva '90 with flying colours." | |||||
1990 Rampolla Dei San Marco (750ml) |
$158.00
|
||||
| Robert Parker 93 | |||||
| "The 1990 Sammarco may prove to be a worthy rival to the glorious 1985. The saturated ruby/purple/garnet color is followed by an intense yet youthful fragrance of ripe black fruits, vanilin, and minerals. Full-bodied, rich, beautifully delineated and structured, it possesses considerable body, tannin, and extract. Although accessible, it is extremely young and ideally should have another 2-4 years of cellaring. It should age well for 15+ years. As I have said many times, Sammarco always reminds me of a top Graves, because of the tobacco/mineral component it often displays. This outstanding Tuscan producer has been exceptionally consistent over the last decade, so it is not surprising that the 1990s performed brilliantly." | |||||
| Wine Spectator 91 | |||||
| Easily lives up to its reputation. Classy, thick and loaded with chewy tannins. This offers rich tobacco, cherry and berry flavors wrapped I toasty vanilla. Full body, full tannins. | |||||

1995 Argiano Solengo (750ml) |
$190.00
|
||||
| Robert Parker 92 | |||||
| An exceptionally impressive wine, the 1995 Solengo (meaning, to go it alone) is a superb blend of Sangiovese and Syrah. The wine, which was aged in new French oak casks, boasts a dense, saturated ruby/purple color, as well as a stunning nose of blackcurrants, chocolate, smoke, and an elusive floral scent. Long, dense, and extravagantly rich, with full body and exceptional purity, this low acid yet fleshy, powerful, silky-textured wine impressively conceals some serious tannin. The wine is exceptionally rich and layered in the mouth, but unevolved, yet it possesses enormous potential. Approximately 1,500 cases were made of this wine, which will be released in September, 1997. It should improve for 5-10 years, and last for two decades. This is a brilliant wine! | |||||

$140.00
|
||||
| Robert Parker 94 | |||||
| Argiano's 1996 Solengo, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese, Merlot, and Syrah (500 cases produced), is a blockbuster effort. The wine boasts a saturated ruby/purple color, as well as an excellent nose of jammy blackberries, cassis, pain grille, and spice. Full-bodied, with superb depth, a layered texture, low acidity, and a blockbuster finish, this is an impressively-endowed, smoky, rich, exotic, accessible, dry red that should age nicely for 12-15 years. | |||||
| Wine Spectator 95 | |||||
| Wild thing. This Italian red is even better than the wonderful debut '95. It offers exotic and complex aromas of blackberry, violet, crushed raspberry, is full-bodied, and though very tannic, the tannins are coated with ripe fruit, and the long and caressing finish delivers even more fruit. Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah. | |||||

1997 Antinori, Tignanello (750ml) |
$181.00
|
||||
| Robert Parker 91 | |||||
| The 1997 Tignanello is at a fascinating adolescent stage, it is neither primary nor fully resolved but somewhere in the middle. The wine¿s candied, super-ripe fruit is made more complex by subtle notes of smoke and sweet licorice. The aromas appear to be somewhat muted, a characteristic that is perhaps highlighted by the presence of slight barnyardy notes that suggest brett may have been an issue in this vintage. Readers who can tolerate the wine¿s imperfections will find much to enjoy over the next few years. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2017. Antonio Galloni | |||||

| "Full bright ruby. Cherry liqueur, coffee and exotic woodsmoke on the superripe nose. Big and chewy on the palate; a broad, oaky wine with a strong impression of extract and plenty of personality. Flavors of crystallized red berries, coffee and mocha. Finishes with huge tannins that avoid dryness. Very true to the vintage." | |||||

$163.00
|
||||
| Wine Spectator 95 | |||||

| Steve Tanzer's International Wine Cellar 91 | |||||
| Deep ruby-red. Deep, slightly reduced, carnal aromas of blackberry skin, cassis, wild strawberry and gunflint. This complex and supple wine is a paradigm of how to combine power and elegance. | |||||

| Steve Tanzer's International Wine Cellar 86 | |||||
| Medium to dark garnet, with ruby highlights. Reticent aromas of sottobosco and tobacco. Rather unconvincing flavors of licorice, rhubarb and camphor, along with an unexpected and jarring note of tropical fruit. An opaque purple-colored blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese, and small quantities of Syrah and Petit Verdot, it is a large-scaled wine with exceptional elegance and complexity as well as more power and richness than the Sammarco. A sweet entry on the palate is followed by abundant quantities of smoky, complex, black currant fruit intermixed with lead pencil and vanillin flavors. Medium-bodied, beautifully knit, and suave, it possesses sweet tannin. Anticipated maturity: 2002-2017. | |||||

| The single-vineyard 1999 Brunello di Montalcino Montosoli, riper and spicier in aroma than the regular bottling, full and with interesting notes of anisette and tar, features flavors of an important richness and density, slightly backward but very substantial and sustained. The additional intensity on the finish suggests another fifteen years of good drinking ahead. | |||||
1999 Ciacci Piccolomini Brunello Vigna di Pianrosso (750ml) |
$190.00
|
||||
| Robert Parker 93 | |||||
| The 1999 Brunello di Montalcino Vigna di Pianrosso, one of the best to date, announces its importance with warm and potent aromas of plums and red currants, chocolate and tar. The rich and concentrated flavors, deep, supple, and very long, have the dimension, class, and definition that put the Sangiovese of Montalcino in a category of its own. | |||||
| Steve Tanzer's International Wine Cellar 91 | |||||

The tannins underpin and extend the flavors, giving the finish impressive density and length. The estate is technically outside of Chianti Classico, but by a mere few hundred yards. The wines of Aljoscha Goldschmidt, however, are easily the equal of those of many a famous name inside the zone. | |||||

| Robert Parker 93 | |||||
| The Sammarco, a blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Sangiovese, has been one of Tuscany's great classics for nearly two decades. The 1999 Sammarco is tight and closed, but wow, what potential! A dense ruby/purple color is followed by a sweet nose of high class cigar tobacco intermixed with smoke, minerals, black currants, and vanilla. In the mouth, it is dense, medium to full-bodied, with superb richness, purity, and overall harmony. Cellaring is mandatory for this backward, still primary 1999. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2025. A classic! | |||||

| Robert Parker 96 | |||||
| The brawny, serious, opaque purple-colored 1999 Giusti dei Notre is a barrique-aged, unfined, unfiltered blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon and 35% Merlot. Its opaque purple color is accompanied by awesome aromas of weedy tobacco, espresso, smoke, chocolate, black currants, and blackberries. Dense, full-bodied, thick, viscous, rich, and pure, it requires another 2-3 years of cellaring, and should last for 15+. Sadly, production is a measly 800 cases. | |||||

| "Quite the fruit bomb with little to no vestiges of Old World red wine. It hits with broad, meaty aromas of black fruits and keeps that tone through the round, rich palate. | The 2001 Il Bosco, one of the few high level examples of Syrah in Italy, is a brilliant dark ruby in color with a nose of blueberries and blackberry liqueur on the nose, and much vanilla and sandalwood in its intense, penetrating aromatics. Sweet and round on the palate, its solid texture and depth are balanced by a richness of extract and a silky mouthfeel which are particularly felt on the lengthy, resonant finish. | |||||

| Good bright, dark red. Inviting aromas and flavors of smoked meat, coffee, plum and dark cherry. Sweet and lush but penetrating, with a saline, chewy texture and a peppery nuance adding to this smooth, dense Brunello's interest. The firm finish features sneaky length and plenty of personality. | |||||
