1970 Montrose (750ml)

Robert Parker 92
"This is one 1970 that appears to possess the necessary components to develop into something special. It remains youthfully hard and astringent, but there is no doubting the high levels of concentration and intensity. Moreover, the wine exhibits a classy, complex bouquet, offering up scents of cedar, black fruits, minerals, and leather. Full-bodied, powerful, and rich, with outstanding concentration, this wine requires another 7-10 years of cellaring - can you believe that? It is unquestionably a 40-50-year wine."
Undergound Wine Journal 18/20
"This is clearly the best St. Estephe of the vintage. As expected, a brooding giant. Very deep, very youthful colour to rim. Tight, cedary, slightly herbacious nose backed by ripe, black fruit. Very big, very had, very tight, with great concentration. If well stored, drink from 2000-2020."
Neil Martin, Wine Journal, eRobert Parker 92
This has always been a lovely Montrose, although it is in a very glacial decline since first encountered in 2001. A deep garnet hue. The nose is still vigorous with mulberry, espresso, crushed black pepper and a touch of liquorice. The palate is masculine and tannic as always, powerful with a slight grainy texture. Perhaps this bottle is more muffled than others but the finish is impressively powerful, with cedar, blackberry and this time a faint hint of black tea. Dry finish, a hedonist might describe this Montrose as a little ¿dour¿. Classic is the word I prefer to use. Drink now-2018. Tasted July 2007.

Robert Parker 90
A deep ruby/purple color with garnet in the middle is followed by fragrant aromas of roasted herbs, briny olives, saddle leather, and steak tartare. With a round, sweet entry, medium to full body, a supple, fat mid-palate, and a diffuse but glycerin-dominated, thick, juicy finish, this wine suggests full maturity, but is capable of lasting another 10-15 years
Wine Spectator 96
Intense aromas of kirsch, currantand spice follow through to a full-bodied palate, with round, velvety tannins and a long, long finish. This is complex, changing on the the nose and palate. Layered and structured. Drinkable now, but will improve for many years to come.
Neil Martin, Wine Journal, eRobert Parker 89
Tasted in London, this is certainly one of the better examples I have encountered of the Montrose 1982. It has a rather conservative, leafy bouquet that lacks a little cohesion, although I remarked that this bottle had more fruité than others: cranberry, a touch of truffle and sous-bois. The palate is medium-bodied and not as complex or as ambitious as Cos d?Estournel, but there is decent fruit intensity here, abraded by time towards again, a conservative, straight-laced Saint Estèphe that is ignorant of the great vintage it was born in. Yet still pleasurable. Tasted May 2011.

1982 Mouton (750ml)

Robert Parker 100
A gustatory and olfactory smorgasbord. When tasting it I recall what Michael Broadbent said about the 1945 Mouton: This is not claret, it is Mouton, Churchill of a wine. The 1982 is incredibly rich on the palate with an opulence, weight, and concentration that one can only compare to the very great Moutons, the 1929 and 1945. It remains, however, one of the legends of this century. Like Latour, the 1982 Mouton-Rothschild is a potential 50-60 year wine. Opaque purple-colored showing absolutely no signs of lightening, Mouton's 1982 is a backward wine. Still tasting like a 4-5 year old Bordeaux, it will evolve for another half century. At the Philadelphia tasting, it was impossibly impenetrable and closed, although phenomenally dense and muscular. However, on two other recent occasions, I decanted the wine in the morning and consumed it that evening and again the following evening. It is immune to oxidation! Moreover, it has a level of concentration that represents the essence of the Mouton terroir as well as the high percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon it contains. Cassis, cedar, spice box, minerals, and vanillin are all present, but this opaque black/purple Pauillac has yet to reveal secondary nuances given its youthfulness. It exhibits huge tannin, unreal levels of glycerin and concentration, and spectacular sweetness and opulence. Nevertheless, it demands another decade of cellaring, and should age effortlessly for another seven or eight decades. I have always felt the 1982 Mouton was perfect, yet this immortal effort might be capable of lasting for 100 years! Readers who want to drink it are advised to decant it for at least 12-24 hours prior to consumption. I suggest double decanting, i.e., pouring it into a clean decanter, washing out the bottle, and then repouring it back into the bottle, inserting the cork, leaving the air space to serve as breathing space until the wine is consumed 12-24 hours later. The improvement is striking. The fact that it resists oxidation is a testament to just how youthful it remains, and how long it will last. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2075.
Wine Spectator 100
A powerful wine with great depth, it's supple sweet, packed with ripe currant, plum and anise flavors, long and extraordinary deep.
James Suckling 96
This is a seductive red with complex and wonderful aromas of cedar, sandalwood and sweet tobacco. It's full-bodied, with velvety tannins and a beautiful palate. Such beauty and refinement. At its peak now. 96 points, non-blind.
Robert Parker 100
This wine remains one of the legends of Bordeaux. It has thrown off the backward, youthful style that existed during its first 25 years of life, and over the last 4-5 years has developed such secondary nuances as cedar and spice box. The crème de cassis, underlying floral note, full-bodied power, extraordinary purity, multilayered texture, and finish of over a minute are a showcase for what this Château accomplished in 1982. The wine is still amazingly youthful, vibrant, and pure. It appears capable of retaining fruit and vibrancy in 2082. Thank God it is beginning to budge as I would like to drink most of my supply before I kick the bucket. This is a great, still youthful wine, and, on occasion, one does understand the hierarchy of Bordeaux châteaux when you see the complexity and brilliance of this first-growth. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2050+. April 2009
Steve Tanzer's International Wine Cellar 98
"Deep ruby-red with a hint of amber at the rim. Cassis, licorice, minerals, tobacco and cocoa on the complex nose; this has started to develop more tertiary aromas and is less fruit-forward than just a few years ago. The palate shows considerable sweetness and an almost opulent mouth feel, with blackcurrant and blackberry flavors given lift and clarity by harmonious acidity and complicated by graphite, tobacco and underbrush notes. The extremely long finish features a cool minty note and sweet, ripe tannins, but I also found a hint of astringency at the back that I had not tasted in previous bottles of this wine. A blockbuster wine, and still remarkably young: I can see this improving and lasting for another 40 years. This is a truly monumental wine and the best first growth of 1982, but I found this particular bottle to be a bit less explosive and rich than some other examples I have tried over the years." Ian D'Agata
Neil Martin, Wine Journal, eRobert Parker 96
Tasted at the 1982 dinner at The Square, the Mouton was sandwiched between the Lafite and the Latour 1982 and to be frank, it did not quite match up to those wines. In many ways, it was a quintessential Mouton ?82 with that bravura nose of opulent, macerated dark cherries, iodine and violets that come racing out of the blocks. It develops a cheeky scent of menthol with aeration. The palate is full-bodied with layers of crème de cassis, dark cherries, mint and tobacco. It is fleshier than Lafite, rounded and plumper in the mouth, although it does not have quite the same level of breeding. Tasted April 2012.

1982 Pavie (750ml)

Robert Parker 91
The strongest Pavie in the eighties, this dark ruby-colored 1982 reveals aromas of strawberry jam intermixed with cherries, dried herbs, earth, and spice. Medium-bodied, with beautiful fruit flavors (particularly kirsch liqueur), this sweet, ripe, expansive Pavie has reached its apogee, where it should remain for 10-15 years.

1988 Leoville-Barton (750ml)

Robert Parker 88
Along with many of its Medoc neighbors, the 1988 is a hard, tough, severe style of wine that will last 15-20 years. It exhibits some of the herbaceousness resulting from Cabernet that was picked too early, but otherwise it is well-proportioned, with medium body and fine depth. Will the fruit stand up to the tannins? The finish reveals copious amounts of rich, deep, curranty fruit. This wine may merit a higher rating in 4-5 years, especially if it turns out to resemble the 1966. Anticipated maturity: 1996-2012. Last tasted, 6/93.

Wine Spectator 100
A magnificent wine that's ripe, powerful, seductive and amazingly deep. Massively concentrated and bursting with currant, plum, berry, cedar, chocolate and all sorts of exotic spice flavors, yet it keeps its balance, never going to excess. Lingers on the finish for minutes. A classic.
Robert Parker 89
The 1988 has an aroma of exotic spices, minerals, blackcurrants, and oak. In the mouth, it is a much firmer, tougher, more obviously tannic wine than the 1989. It is a beautifully made 1988 that will last 20-30 years, but the astringency of the tannins is slightly troubling. Patience will be a necessity for purchasers of this wine. Anticipated maturity: 2000-2030. Last tasted,
Neil Martin, Wine Journal, eRobert Parker 89
Tasted at La Fete de la Fleur, the Mouton-Rothschild ?88 as an austere bouquet, dusty black fruits, bilberry, tobacco and cigar box. The palate is medium-bodied and paradigmatic of the vintage, masculine, austere and tarry. The tannins are a little coarser than I would prefer and there is a dustiness that I find distracting. I worry that this may be drying out? Tasted June 2009.

1988 Rieussec (750ml)

Robert Parker 93
The 1988 remains a very backward wine. Full-bodied and powerful, extremely rich and dense, it may be the least evolved 1988. The nose offers enticing coconut, orange, vanilla, and honeyed scents. The flavors are highly extracted. The wine's acidity and youthfulness suggest this wine needs another 5-10 years of cellaring. It should keep for 30 years.
Wine Spectator 94
Sweet, ripe and loaded with honey, toffee, carameland nutmeg-scented pear and apricot aromas andflavors. Generous fig and tobacco notes echo onthe long finish. A silky, supple, succulent winefrom France that should improve through at least 2000.

Wine Spectator 98
The 1990 Romanee-Conti should ultimately be the most compelling and complex of the DRC wines. Normally it possesses a lighter color than either La Tache or Richebourg, but in 1990 it boasts a surprisingly saturated color that is the equal of La Tache and Richebourg. The nose offers up sweet, clove, cinnamon, and blackberry aromas intermingled with toasty, smoky new oak. Lavishly rich and full-bodied, with abundant tannins, this profound, surprisingly large-scaled, tannic wine boasts more muscle than usual. Let's hope that the billionaires that buy it have as much taste as money. Anticipated maturity: 2000-2025 .

Robert Parker 89
A strong effort, the 1990 Pavie exhibits aromas of sweet kirsch, licorice, roasted herbs, spice box, and earth. Medium-bodied with sweet tannin, low acidity, and good concentration, it should drink well for another 4-5 years. June 2009
Neil Martin, Wine Journal, eRobert Parker 90
Tasted at the Fine Wine Experience?s Pavie vertical. Perhaps the last great Pavie before Gérard Perse bought the estate in 1997. The 1990 Pavie sports a deep core with deep tawny rim and sports a very ?classic? Pavie bouquet that is muted at first, but unfurls gracefully with intense cedar aromas deriving from the Cabernet Sauvignon. Underneath there are aromas of crushed stone and a touch of cold black tea. It does not have the vim and vigour of the 1989. The palate is medium-bodied and whilst it is not as vigorous as a couple of years ago, it retains a supple texture, impressive harmony and a lovely wild strawberry, fig, leather and brine tinged finish. Fresh and vital, this is holding up well. Tasted June 2010.

Robert Parker 92
This brilliant estate, adjacent to La Conseillante, Petrus, and Vieux-Chateau-Certan, has turned in exemplary efforts in 1993-95. One of the vintage's most notable successes, L'Evangile's 1994 possesses a dense, saturated purple color, followed by a gorgeously sweet nose of framboise/cassis, with mineral and licorice notes in the background. This medium to full-bodied wine reveals a seamless, opulent texture, fabulous purity to its layers of fruit, as well as superb extraction and equilibrium. This terrific wine is one of the few 1994s that has most of its tannin concealed by the wine's wealth of fruit. It is a gorgeous L'Evangile. Anticipated maturity: 2001-2020.

Robert Parker 93
Michel Delon, a great man, is the consummate proprietor, meticulously administering this vast estate spread out along the St.-Julien/Pauillac border, separated from Latour's finest vineyard by a mere ten feet. The 1993-95 vintages from Delon are brilliant wines. Leoville-Las-Cases remains one of the irrefutable reference points for high class Bordeaux. One of the more massive Medocs of the vintage, this opaque purple-colored wine exhibits fabulous richness and volume in the mouth. Layers of pure black-cherry and cassis fruit are intermixed with stony, mineral-like scents, as well as high quality toasty oak. Medium to full-bodied, with a sweet, rich entry, this wine possesses plenty of tannin, yet fabulous extract and length. Leoville-Las-Cases is one of the half-dozen great wines of the Medoc in 1994. Anticipated maturity: 2002-2025. This lion never falls asleep on the job!
Neil Martin, Wine Journal, eRobert Parker 94
Paired against the 1993 by Jean-Hubert Delon at the chateau, this remains the Las-Cases that I completely mis-read when first encountered. There is a little more ripeness on the nose with black cherries, a touch of dates and a slight scents of brine/seaweed that I find most attractive. The palate is very smooth and velvety, a Las-Cases flirting with opulence rather than actually attaining it. Very pure, slightly more alcoholic that I recall and on the finish, I prefer the tension on the 1993. Yet overall, I think this is a slightly better wine than that: more cohesive and greater length. Drink 2010-2035+. Tasted October 2007.

Robert Parker 93
Dazzling since birth, the 1995 has not lost a thing since bottling. A saturated dark purple color suggests a wine of considerable depth and concentration. The nose offers up gorgeous aromas of sweet kirsch intermixed with black raspberry, mineral, and smoky notes. Full-bodied, with superb richness and purity, loads of tannin, and a layered, multidimensional personality, this terrific La Fleur-Petrus is the finest wine I have tasted at this property in the twenty years I have been visiting Bordeaux. Readers may remember that I previously reported that a 10-acre old vine sector of Le Gay was sold to La Fleur-Petrus, increasing the latter's vineyard to 33 acres. I believe this 10-acre acquisition has beefed up La Fleur-Petrus, a fact particularly evident in this 1995. It is a splendid effort! Anticipated maturity: 2005-2025.
Wine Spectator 93
Dark ruby color. Aromatic, with flowers and blackberry on the nose. Full-bodied, with tightly knit core of blackberry, chocolate and vanilla character. Silky texture. Long and rich finish. Starting to open up. Give it a little more time. This gets better and better.--'95/'96 Bordeaux retrospective.

Robert Parker 96
A beauty, the opaque dense purple-colored 1995 exhibits jammy cassis, vanillin, and minerals in its fragant but still youthful aromatics. Medium to full-bodied, whith exceptional purity, superb concentration, and a long, intense, ripe, 41-second finish, this is a magnificent example of latour. As the wine sat in the glass, scents of roasted espresso and toasty new oak emerged. Anticipating maturity: 2012-2050
Wine Spectator 94
This is showing wonderfully at the moment. Dark ruby color. Aromas of mint, blackberry and currant rise gracefully from the glass. It's full-bodied, with supple, fine tannins and a long finish. Wonderful texture. Best after 2002.

Robert Parker 95
"A blend of 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Cabernet Franc, and 19% Merlot..this profound Mouton is more accessible than the more muscular 1996. In the mouth the wine is "great stuff", with superb density, a full bodied personality, rich mid-palate, and a layered, profound finish that last for 40+ seconds."
Wine Spectator 96
"Mindblowing. Absolutely breathtaking. This wine is full-bodied with licorice, tobacco and cassis permeating nose and palate, has super tannins and an ultralong finiish."
Neil Martin, Wine Journal, eRobert Parker 95-97
First tasted blind for Wine magazine when it was "utterly pure & beguiling". Brilliant. Then at the CECWINE 1995 horizontal in September 2004. A sensuous nose with notes of black cherry and blueberry with a dash of black pepper. Becomes more savory and meaty in the glass. The palate is very harmonious with fresh acidity, well knit unobtrusive tannins and layers of sweet black fruits. Quite a showy, ostentatious wine, spoilt by a lack of cohesion on the finish. Stylish, quite brash. Drinking from 2006 I would say. Finally in September 2005, where it was showing beautifully at the Mouton vertical. A very deep garnet core. An attractive, rounded nose of black cherry, black olives and mocha. Complex and well-knit. The palate is very concentrated, more focused than the 1996, with well-knit new oak. Decadent, sweet ripe red fruits: raspberry, black cherry. Superb length. A slightly more complete wine than the 1996.
Steve Tanzer's International Wine Cellar 95
"Very dark, fully saturated ruby to the rim. Deep, brooding, rich aromas of blackberry, violet, milk chocolate, black pepper, cedar and incense; sexy and captivating. Bright and focused on entry, then rich, very smooth and suave, with highly concentrated flavors of red berries, dark plum, cedar and graphite. The extremely long, juicy finish features lively acids, great balance and persistent notes of underbrush and minerals. The mounting tannins coat the palate dry and are still years away from resolving fully. Harvested from September 12 through 27, which suggests that the merlot was probably very ripe. According to Tourbier, "We included a bit more merlot than usual because we felt the cabernet sauvignon had particularly tough tannins in 1995 and we didn't want to risk making too tough or structured a wine. So we used the merlot to soften it up a bit." The estate was so happy with the quality of the wine (and the rather high 95% selection for the grand vin speaks volumes), said Tourbier, that they only made 15 barriques of the second wine Petit Mouton, which was launched with the 1993 vintage. A huge volume year, 1995 was characterized by very fine weather through most of the growth cycle but was marred by September rains." Ian D'Agata

Made in a style similar to the 1996, the 1995 reveals copious quantities of black fruits, obvious old vine intensity (note the minerals and deep mid-palate), but mouthsearing levels of tannin will only be enjoyed by masochists. There are many good things about this wine, but the elevated tannin level is cause for concern. If the tannin melts away and the fruit holds, this will be an outstanding effort. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2025.

Intense blackberry aroma, with dark chocolate and vanilla. Full-bodied, with silky tannins and good fruit. Lots of wood on the palate still, but I appreciate the racy style. Tight.--'95/'96 Bordeaux retrospective.

"This is unquestionably a profound Grand-Puy-Lacoste.It reveals an essence of creme de cassis character which sets it apart from other Pauillacs.Massive, extremely structured, and with 25-30 more years of longevity, this immensely styled Grand-Puy-Lacoste will require 7-8 years of patience."
Neil Martin, Wine Journal, eRobert Parker 93
Tasted at The Ledbury at the Grand Puy Lacoste dinner. This bottle is much more unevolved and closed than others that I have tried. It has very good intensity on the nose with blackberry, iodine, cassis and a touch of violets that must have been picked down in Margaux. The palate has a real sappy texture matched with good acidity, but it is very backward and sultry towards the fiish. Bold, dense and introspective, leave this for another 4- years. Tasted September 2011.

1996 Latour (750ml)

Robert Parker 99
A spectacular Latour, the 1996 may be the modern day clone of the 1966, only riper. This vintage, which is so variable in Pomerol, St.-Emilion, and Graves, was fabulous for the late-harvested Cabernet Sauvignon of the northern Medoc because of splendid weather in late September and early October. An opaque purple color is followed by phenomenally sweet, pure aromas of cassis infused with subtle minerals. This massive offering possesses unreal levels of extract, full body, intensely ripe, but abundant tannin, and a finish that lasts for nearly a minute. Classic and dense, it displays the potential for 50-75 years of longevity. Although still an infant, it would be educational to taste a bottle. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2050.
Wine Spectator 97
"Clearly the wine of the vintage and better than the 1995. This is classic Latour with racy, firm tannins, full and well-integrated. It's full-bodied with a long palate; cassis mineral, violet and berry aromas changing to minerals and spices. A complete wine, with both power and finesse."

"This impressive wine is a classic. Although backward, it exhibits a dense ruby/purple color in addition to abundant black currant fruit intertwined with spicy oak and truffle-like scents. The wine is brilliantly made, full-bodied, and tightly-structured with plenty of muscle and outstanding concentration and purity. It should turn out to be a long-lived Leoville Barton, and somewhat of a sleeper."
Steve Tanzer's International Wine Cellar 93+
"Saturated medium ruby. Very black aromas of cassis, licorice and violet, plus a whiff of game. Dense, thick and youthful, with a compelling layered texture and major palate impact.. Robert Parker 90
The 1996 Le Tertre-Roteboeuf is less sumptuous out of bottle than it was from cask. Nevertheless, this is an outstanding wine produced in the tell-tale style of this well-placed hillside vineyard. The color is a deep ruby, and the nose offers up hedonistic notes of smoky, creme brulee, roasted coffee, and chocolate-covered cherries. This medium-bodied wine is exhibiting more structure, muscle, and tannin than I remember from cask. In fact, after the sweet aromatics and initial blast of fruit on the attack, the wine seems to close down, revealing moderate tannin in the very good finish. Unlike most vintages of Le Tertre-Roteboeuf, which can be drunk immediately, the 1996 requires 2-3 years of cellaring, and should keep for 15-16 years.

Deep ruby-red. Deep, slightly reduced, carnal aromas of blackberry skin, cassis, wild strawberry and gunflint. Like many of its peers, the 1998 has filled out spectacularly. Now in the bottle, this opaque black/purple-colored offering has increased in stature, richness, and size. A blend of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, and 2% Cabernet Franc (57% of the production was utilized), it is an extremely powerful, super-concentrated wine offering notes of roasted espresso, creme de cassis, smoke, new saddle leather, graphite, and licorice. It is massive, with awesome concentration, mouth-searing tannin levels, and a saturated flavor profile that grips the mouth with considerable intensity. This is a 50-year Mouton, but patience will be required as it will not be close to drinkability for at least a decade. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2050.

"Cigar tobacco, cedar and red fruit aromas. Medium- to full-bodied, with silky tannins and a delicate finish. Elegant, seductive Mouton."
Neil Martin, Wine Journal, eRobert Parker 92
Tasted at the Claret Club Mouton-Rothschild dinner. The 1998 Mouton has a very deep garnet hue. The nose has good intensity and fine definition with blackberry, cassis, graphite and a touch of sous-bois. The palate is tight at first...a dense ball of Pauillac stubbornness are the exact words that I wrote. But it unwinds nicely: graphite and cedar interlacing the black fruit, almost brutal towards the finish that needs more persistency. This will been another 4-5 years in bottle. Tasted November 2010.

"Very deep saturated ruby. Archetypical cabernet sauvignon-dominated nose offers fresh blackcurrant, lead pencil and flowers complicated by strong spice notes. Bright and juicy on entry, with very pure flavors of dark berries, underbrush and dried herbs, then slightly austere and linear in the middle palate. Finishes with a lingering saline nuance and very good length. A very refined and impeccably balanced Mouton, but I would have liked a little bit more concentration and opulence for an even higher score. This classic Mouton possesses relatively high acidity and a solid tannic structure; it offers early accessibility but should age effortlessly for another 15 or 20 years. In 1998, after a couple years of experimentation, Mouton began to de-leaf in a systematic fashion on both sides of the vine rows. Another vintage with a large crop, 1998 featured an unsettled September with rain falling during the cabernet sauvignon harvest (one of the reasons why 1998 is widely considered a Right Bank year.)" The 1999 Brunello di Montalcino Vigna di Pianrosso, one of the best to date, announces its importance with warm and potent aromas of plums and red currants, chocolate and tar. The rich and concentrated flavors, deep, supple, and very long, have the dimension, class, and definition that put the Sangiovese of Montalcino in a category of its own.
Steve Tanzer's International Wine Cellar 91
Good red-ruby. Subtly complex nose melds cassis, truffle and expensive oak; shows an almost liqueur-like sweetness. Then supple, dense and bright, with a pliant texture and excellent depth of flavor. This is ripe and fleshy but also classically dry, structured and elegant, with lovely inner-mouth perfume. Very penetrating, long wine, finishing with suave tannins that are firm but fine.
Wine Spectator 94
Wow. Very, very rich, with blackberry, grilled meat and fresh porcini character. Full-bodied, with thick yet refined and silky tannins and a long, long finish. A real beauty. Wonderful.

The 2001 Oreno is simply a great wine. An inky ruby with purple highlights, intensely expansive and sweet on a fruit-rich nose which is loaded with smoky tar and graphite notes, it is packed and powerful on the palate with a density and concentration which are cunningly concealed by the plush and caressing texture, the superb balance and exceptional length of the finish and aftertaste. "Am I being too stingy with the 2003 Chateau Margaux? A wine of extraordinary complexity and intensity, it reveals a deep purple color, a style not unlike the 1990 Margaux (possibly even more concentrated), a velvety texture, and notes of spring flowers interwoven with camphor, melted licorice, creme de cassis, and pain grille. Not a blockbuster, it offers extraordinary intensity as well as a surreal delicacy/lightness. There is riveting freshness to this offering, which tips the scales at a lofty (for this estate) 13.5% alcohol, as well as an alluring sweetness and accessibility. It probably will tighten up over the next few years. Nevertheless, it is a profound Chateau Margaux that brings to mind a hypothetical blend of the 1982 and 1990. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2035."
Steve Tanzer's International Wine Cellar 96
"Full, saturated red-ruby. Knockout nose combines redcurrant, tropical chocolate, leather, woodsmoke and nutty oak with exotic chocolate mint and coffee liqueur; still manages to retain floral lift even in this beastly vintage. Then wonderfully fat, sweet and full, even if it comes across as almost heavy following the ineffable 2005 and 2004 examples. But "relatively inelegant" for Margaux still suggests a degree of refinement that few chateaux can match in the greatest vintages. A hugely rich and dense wine that finishes with elevated but ripe tannins and great length, with a subtle suggestion of dry spices. Pontallier says the terroir will take over in 20 years, "like with the '82." Splendid."

Tasted blind at Farr Vintner?s Left Bank tasting. The Château Margaux 2003 has closed down since I last encountered it. Much more tertiary on the nose with dried herbs, sous-bois and a touch of leather; it finds it difficult to attain the femininity it showed its youth. Nonetheless, the palate is very harmonious with supple tannins, lovely expressive red-berried fruit with blackberry, boysenberry and scorched earth. Harmonious and wily on the finish. Lovely?and improving in the glass. Tasted October 2010.

The 2005 Mouton Rothschild will have to take a back seat to the prodigious 2006, but administrator Philippe Dalhuin deserves considerable credit for pushing Mouton to higher quality levels over recent years. A blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest mostly Merlot, the dark purple-hued 2005 exhibits a restrained but promising nose of cedar, tobacco leaf, creme de cassis, and toasty oak. Full-bodied, tannic, and extremely backward, with the vintage¿s tell-tale acidity, it appears to be even more closed in the bottle than it was from barrel. It does possess a long finish and multilayered mouthfeel. This is an undeniably outstanding, yet restrained, shy wine for a Mouton Rothschild. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2040+
Neil Martin, Wine Journal, eRobert Parker 98
Tasted blind against its peers, this brilliant Mouton-Rothschild trumped both Latour and Lafite! If it lacked the same level of breeding out of barrel, then it sure as hell is making up for its now. The nose is incredibly ripe and is perhaps more accessible than those aforementioned Pauillacs. Dark cherries, kirsch, cedar and some lovely vanillary new oak, sleek and sophisticated. Great definition. The palate has a viscous entry, fat round tannins, voluptuous, generous and sensuous. Great depth with blackberry, raspberry, a touch of black olive tapenade. Sensuous, feminine finish. Sublime. Drink 2017-2040+ Tasted January 2009.

Dark purple black in color. Complex aromas of mineral, licorice, lead pencil and blackberry follow through to a full body, with ultrafine tannins and a caressing, pretty finish. Has a lovely texture. Shows elegance and refinement.

Bright, full ruby. Enticing aromas of black raspberry, licorice and melted chocolate. Sweet, lush and superripe; in fact, this is downright massive, with an almost porty, lower-toned quality perked up by complex mineral and red licorice elements. Wonderfully fat, sweet wine with extravagant chocolate, mocha and nutty oak tones. Finishes with rich, broad tannins and a wave of chocolatey dark fruits. This is the first release from Jayson Woodbridge's home vineyard, which features nine separate blocks of vines and six clones, and which was picked in multiple passes and fermented in 500-liter puncheons.
Wine Spectator 90
A tightly knit youngster, with hints of earthy cedar, tar and tobacco which join ripe currant, red cherry, anise, leather, sage and spice, ending with a strong, structured tannic finish. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec.
Robert Parker 95
The opaque purple-hued 2005 exhibits an extraordinary nose of violets, creme de cassis, charcoal, and spring flowers. Gorgeously pure, opulently full-bodied, with sweet tannins, superb concentration, and a low acid, ripe, tannic finish, it tastes like a top-notch vintage of ripe Bordeaux, but made in California. It can be drunk now and over the next 20-25 years. Bravo!
