One of the best vintages of this consistently good Chateau. Creamy and superbly balanced.
David Peppercorn
One of the two great wines of Barsac, this is always among the finest wines of Sauternes, and one of the few that can rival Yquem for the perfection of its flavour and breed, if not for its power..It is interesting to not that almost the entire vineyard is planted with Semillon, which is said to suit the chalky soil..These are very long lived wine, combining freshness, elegance and breed without the weight of the very best Sauternes, as distinct from Barsac, but with a lusciousness which slowly opens up with age. The balance, which is one of the greatest charms of the wines, means that it keeps its colour and hardly ever goes dark, so maderization is a stranger here.

Quite similar to the 1979, yet showing a more perceptible amber/brown edge to it, the 1978 La Fleur Petrus has a supple, rich, fat, ripe Merlot fruitiness, medium to full body, and light, round tannins.

1978 Lafleur (750ml)

Robert Parker 93
More and more the 1978 Lafleur is looking like one of the two or three finest wines of the vintage, along with La Mission-Haut-Brion and Latour. This dark plum/garnet-colored wine exhibits a knock-out nose of black cherry fruit intermixed with licorice, minerals, cedar, and spice. Medium to full-bodied, with powerful tannin remaining, this highly extracted wine is atypical for the 1978 vintage. It is a weighty, broad-shouldered, muscular, virile 1978 that is just beginning to reveal secondary nuances and complexity. I have always thought this wine could develop along the lines of the 1966, and I am more convinced than ever that it is the seventies clone of that vintage
Wine Spectator 92
Layered and complex, with loads of cassis and blackberry flavors and classic-tasting Lafleur terroir coming through in the mineral, lead pencil, wet earth character.-Château Lafleur vertical. January 2000

1983 Cheval Blanc (750ml)

$645.00

Robert Parker 95
"A classic example of Cheval Blanc's style, the 1983 continues to put on weight and develop favorably in the bottle. A saturated dark ruby color with some faint lightening at the edges exhibits less age than most right bank 1983s. The huge nose of mint, jammy black fruits, chocolate, and coffee is sensational, as well as surprisingly well-developed. The wine offers lusty, rich, unctuous fruit presented in a medium to full-bodied, low acid, concentrated, rather hedonistic style. There are no hard edges to be found, but there is plenty of tannin in the lush finish. Gorgeous for drinking now, this is a great Cheval Blanc that should continue to drink well, and possibly improve for another 20 years. The 1983 is far superior to anything Cheval Blanc has subsequently produced. It remains somewhat undervalued for its quality." Last tasted 12/97
Wine Spectator 96
A giant of a wine. The complex aromas and thickly textured flavors range from plum and raisin to coffee, minerals and mint. Not so elegant as a typical Cheval; more in the mold of the powerful '47 and legendary '21. Drink or hold.--Cheval-Blanc vertical.
Neil Martin, Wine Journal, eRobert Parker 96
Tasted single blind at the Fine Wine Experience horizontal in London. A deep garnet core. A very well defined, herbaceous nose, with tobacco, chestnut, savoury fruit and a touch of dates. Quite complex and with very good vigour, the Cabernet Franc right in the (slightly bretty?) saddle. After thirty minutes, a lovely menthol character coming through. The palate is medium-bodied, very well balanced with fine tannins and superb acidity. Very well poised with great tension. Pure blackberry, raspberry, Chinese tea, tobacco and dried leaves. Lovely, elegant, very focused finish. Superb Cheval, multi-faceted if not as sophisticated as the ?85. Tasted October 2008.

1986 Margaux (750ml)

Robert Parker 96
"The 1986 Margaux continues to be the most powerful, tannic, and muscular Margaux made in decades. One wonders if the 1928 or 1945 had as much power and depth as the 1986? The wine is mammoth, with extraordinary extract, superb balance, and a frightingly tannic finish. A Margaux of immense stature, it is made in a masculine, full-bodied style that is in complete contrast with the 1990. It should prove nearly immortal in terms of ageability."
Wine Spectator 98
"An absolute classic; incredibly concentrated, complex, elegant and firm without a hint of hardness. Layers of blackberry, cassis, plum, cedar, vanilla and spice, yet there is also a sense of reserve, indicating this has plenty of room to grow. Hold until 1995 to 2000."

A wild wine, with full-throttle, ripe flavors. Very exotic, with perfumed crushed grape, toast and honey aromas. Full-bodied, with lots of fruit and a hint of orange peel on the finish.
Robert Parker 93
The Batard possesses a gorgeous aroma of oranges, flowers, butter, and minerals. In the mouth, it is pure buttery fruit supported admirably by crisp acidity and a deft touch of toasty new oak. A big wine by the Leflaive's standards, it should drink magnificently for at least 10-12 years.

Robert Parker 96
The 1990 has been a consistently perfect wine for much of its life. However, it appears to have turned the corner and lost some of its most profound aspects. It is still an immortal Chateauneuf du Pape, with a dense ruby/purple color in addition to a gorgeous nose of licorice, white flowers, blueberries, and blackberries. The wine is heady, with high alcohol, an unctuous texture, and an extraordinary ripe, concentrated finish. However, some bottles tasted seem far older than others. I don't know whether it is a bottle variation problem or a question of improper storage. Nevertheless, pristine bottles remain candidates for perfection. Catherine and Sophie Armenier continue to fashion one of France's greatest wines. There are 750 cases produced from 80% Grenache, 10% Mourvedre, and 10% miscellaneous varietals.

Wine Spectator 94
You won't soon forget this vivid and expressive Champagne. It packs in compound layers of citrus, vanilla, pear and nutmeg that harmonize and linger on the finish. Bright acidity makes it extra refreshing and layered.

Amazingly silky, boasting mouth-coating ripe tannins, medium body and beautiful mineral, earth, currant and plum flavors. The wood is surprisingly well integrated for a red wine from this estate. Better than a barrel sample tasted earlier this year.
Allen Meadows, Burghound 88
...the Clos de Santenots offers beautiful fruit, dense, rich flavors and a long finish. While it is not particularly complex or nuanced, it does offer undeniable style and a certain seductiveness.

Wine Spectator 95
Shows great class. A superconcentrated wine, subtle and racy, its loads of mineral, wet stone, and vanilla-cream flavors both powerful and subtle. Remarkable harmony. Full-bodied and a pleasure to taste now, but clearly better after 2005
Allen Meadows, Burghound 95
A definite candidate for wine of the vintage with its superb fruit offering powerful mineral, limestone and intensely detailed citrus aromas followed by muscular, dense and incredibly long flavors of remarkable complexity. The purity this displays rivals that of the spectacular 96 though the tactile impression is quite different between the two wines. More than a few Burgundy lovers believe that the Bâtard is Niellon's best wine but for my money and taste preferences, the Chevalier is the clear class of this cellar.

Steve Tanzer's International Wine Cellar 93+
Very strong mousse. Deep, yeasty aromas dominated by toffee, butterscotch and toast. Quite powerful but already harmonious, with real thickness of flavor and oily extract leavened by ripe acidity. Very fresh in the mouth, with very ripe hints of yellow fruits and strawberry complicated by leesy and toasty flavors in the background. A large-scaled, extremely backward wine that should develop for a decade or two in bottle. This is looking like a great vintage for both Cristal Brut and Rose.
Wine News 95
Appealing scents of lemon, vanilla and gingerbread. Creamy flavors of lemon custard, vanilla cream and Golden Delicious apple. Rich and round with supple notes of orange and cream in the soft close.

Wine Spectator 98
"Subtle, complex and refined, with aromas of cherry, licorice, mineral, berry and other sweet, ripe fruit. Full-bodied, compacted, with fine, silky tannins. Long finish."
Steve Tanzer's International Wine Cellar 95
"Full, bright medium ruby. Nose shows an almost liqueur-like ripeness, along with notes of bitter chocolate and menthol; a great expression of ripe but youthfully unevolved cabernet franc. Extremely dense and pure but still quite tight and showing a minty austerity. Wonderful acids give the wine superb clarity of flavor. This will require another decade to unfold. Finishes impressively persistent and juicy. Drink 2010 through 2030."
Neil Martin, Wine Journal, eRobert Parker 98
Slightly light in colour than Ausone 1998 with a little more maturity on the rim. The nose is more extrovert than Ausone, opulent and fleshy, not dissimilar to a more cultured version of the La Mondotte. It develops further nuances of sloes and black plum with ten minutes in the glass. The palate is very impressive: wonderful structure, a forceful assertive Cheval Blanc with a tad more weight and depth than Ausone. Very harmonious on the finish, the merlot dominating, although you can tell that the Cabernet Franc is lurking in the sidelines waiting to take over from 2010. A great Cheval Blanc fulfilling all its initial promise. Tasted March 2008.
Robert Parker 93
This blend of 55% Cabernet Franc and 45% Merlot exhibits a dark ruby/purple color as well as classic aromas of menthol, plums, mulberries, and assorted black fruits. The oak, texture, acidity, and tannin are all beautifully integrated. While full-bodied, elegant, concentrated, and impeccably balanced, it requires several years of cellaring. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2020.
Steve Tanzer's International Wine Cellar 98
Enticing nose offers minty blackcurrant, rose petal, cedar, and red cherry liqueur aromas. Then rich, suave and dense in the mouth, with voluptuous red cherry, raspberry, mineral and cocoa flavors complicated by tobacco and flinty nuances. The finish is smoothly tannic and extremely long, with a strong mineral nuance and just a hint of phenolic dryness. An extremely refined Cheval Blanc, exhibiting impeccable balance and breed; very cabernet franc-dominated and hence very Cheval Blanc. The year was memorable for a bout of frost on May 29 that sharply reduced crop levels; the summer started hot, then turned cool, but temperatures warmed up again during a magnificent September. The harvest took place from September 18 to 27. Only 160 barriques were made from a freakishly low yield. I have encountered bottle variation with the 1961 Cheval Blanc, which I've tasted 11 times through the years, but this particular bottle was pretty unforgettable. Dan Agata

1999 Bollinger VV Francaises (750ml)

Wine- Maker Notes
A unique phenomenon, Vieilles Vignes Françaises is produced with grapes coming from three very small pieces of land of Grand Cru which amount to just under 0.6 hectares (1,4 acres) : Chaudes Terres in Aÿ (0.6 acre), Clos St-Jacques in Aÿ (0.5 acre) and Croix Rouge in Bouzy (0.3 acre). These were unaffected by the phylloxera, which destroyed all the Champagne vineyards at the end of the 19th century The vineyards were then re-grafted with American rootstocks. Les Vieilles Vignes Françaises miraculously escaped the devastation and therefore were not re-grafted. They continue to be planted en foule, in the historic, layered, self-propagating method and thus perpetuate what can be called the remains of the days of the Champagne region
Robert Parker 95
"The 1999 Vielles Vignes Francaises is simply stunning. Layers of perfumed red raspberries, flowers and spices flow onto the palate with breathtaking beauty. The mousse is exceptionally fine, as is everything about this wine. Although the wine possesses superb density and richness, it remains light on the palate and supremely graceful. This bottle was disgorged in July, 2008." Antonio Galloni

"The virtually perfect 1999 Maya is a wine of stupendous unctuosity, richness, fruit, and elegance. It is remarkable that the Cabernet Franc grown in these red volcanic soils can produce wines of such intensity as well as elegance. Notes of cassis, blueberries, blackberries, espresso, smoke, earth, and vanilla are offered in a full-bodied, profoundly concentrated and layered style. For whatever reason, the 1999 Maya revealed more forwardness than the Cabernet Sauvignon cuvee. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2024."
Steve Tanzer's International Wine Cellar 96+
"Full ruby. Crystallized black cherry, violet, bitter chocolate and espresso on the nose; conveys great ripeness but also outstanding vibrancy. A silky, densely packed wine of great concentration and depth. Extremely young but not hard. Offers great structure and breadth. Finishes with very smooth tannins and great building length."
Wine Spectator 95
"Massive and concentrated, if a bit angular and tightly wound, with chewy, chunky leather, pencil lead, currant and herbal flavors that are framed by rugged tannins. Needs time to soften the tugh edges, but all the ingredients are there for greatness."

Extremely ripe, indeed even notes of torrefaction and roast espresso beans precede big, robust, forceful austere black fruit flavors that have slightly drying tannins but not as much density and length as usual. Really quite regal but in more of a middle weight than its normal massive, well muscled and structured character. In short, this is classy, sappy and powerful with the same hint of reduction; again, decant first.

The 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon Tychson Hill Vineyard (a valley floor site planted on a slight incline north of St. Helena) exhibits an opaque purple color as well as a beautifully sweet nose of creme de cassis, licorice, lead pencil shavings and pen ink. A classic Napa Cabernet Sauvignon with sweet tannin, full-bodied power and gorgeous purity and intensity, it will benefit from another 5-7 years of cellaring and should keep for 30+ years.

Robert Parker 100
There are 10,000 cases of this perfect sweet white Bordeaux. The 2001 Yquem reveals a hint of green in its light gold color. While somewhat reticent aromatically, with airing, it offers up honeyed tropical fruit, orange marmalade, pineapple, sweet creme brulee, and buttered nut-like scents. In the mouth, it is full-bodied with gorgeously refreshing acidity as well as massive concentration and unctuosity. Everything is uplifted and given laser-like focus by refreshing acidity. This large-scaled, youthful Yquem appears set to take its place among the most legendary vintages of the past, and will age effortlessly for 75+ years. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2100+
Wine Spectator 100
This is the greatest young Yquem I have ever tasted from bottle. Yellow color with a golden hue and almost green tint. It shows intense aromas of botrytis with spices and blanched almonds that follow through to honey, maple syrup, dried apricots and pineapples. Full-bodied and very sweet, it is thick and powerful with layers of fruit and a bright finish. It is wonderfully balanced and refined, showing the class and pedigree that only this Sauternes estate can deliver. The winemakers at Yquem say it's their greatest modern wine ever. They have not exaggerated. This is best to drink after 2012.

2002 Grace Family, Blank Vineyard California (750ml)

$190.00

Wine- Maker Notes
It's not surprising that the wine made from Grace clone grapes grown at Chotsie and Alan Blank?s 1.8 acre vineyard in Rutherford shows similarities of style to the wine made from our own vineyard in St. Helena. Smooth, firm tannins give an elegant supple texture that frames a graceful and harmonious whole. But Blank Vineyard's own unique terroir affords it a very unique personality as well. The wine serves up a beguiling array of wintergreen, herb and spice notes that point toward coffee and camphor in addition to ripe red fruit. Not really a sibling, but rather a cousin of the original Grace Family Cabernet.

"As for the 2002 Hundred Acre (1,200 cases), this is a terrific example of great Napa Cabernet Sauvignon. A seamless wine with extraordinary concentration, a dense purple color, a beautifully sweet nose of black cherry liqueur intermixed with cassis, graphite, smoke, and underbrush, it is layered, multi-dimensional, and opulent, with a long finish. Although more accessible and flashy than the 2001, it is capable of lasting 15 more years."

Robert Parker 95
The 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon Madrona Ranch is just an amazing wine in the vintage. Notes of smoked meats intermixed with licorice, camphor, graphite, blackberry, and flowers, with a hint of cedar and spice box, have produced a wine that is more up-front and forward than most Abreu wines have been, and gorgeously rich and full-bodied. Last year I thought the wine needed 2-3 years of cellaring, but based on this tasting, I could drink it now or cellar it for 20+ years.

Robert Parker 95
The blockbuster 2003 Haut-Brion (13% alcohol) possesses extremely high tannin, but that component is well-concealed by a cascade of mulberry, blackberry, cherry, and plum-like fruit. There is even a hint of figs under the blue and red fruit spectrum. While broad and ripe with a sweet, glyceral mouthfeel as well as a long, powerful, persistent finish, it retains its elegance and nobility. A wine of both power and finesse, it will benefit from 3-4 years of cellaring, and keep for 25-30.
Wine Spectator 96
Complex aromas of black licorice, tobacco and cedar with red fruits. Full-bodied, with superseductive, silky tannins, loads of fruit and a finish that lasts for minutes. A beauty in all the sense of the word. Best after 2012.
Neil Martin, Wine Journal, eRobert Parker 93
Tasted blind at Farr Vintner?s Left Bank tasting. This has a ravishing, decadent nose: rich summer pudding, raising, blackberry, scorched earth and leather. The palate is well balanced with just a touch of sur-maturité on the entry, undergrowth, sous-bois and tobacco towards the finish that is more like Lafite-Rothschild than Haut-Brion. Tasted October 2010.

2003 Margaux (750ml)

Robert Parker 99
"Am I being too stingy with the 2003 Chateau Margaux? A wine of extraordinary complexity and intensity, it reveals a deep purple color, a style not unlike the 1990 Margaux (possibly even more concentrated), a velvety texture, and notes of spring flowers interwoven with camphor, melted licorice, creme de cassis, and pain grille. Not a blockbuster, it offers extraordinary intensity as well as a surreal delicacy/lightness. There is riveting freshness to this offering, which tips the scales at a lofty (for this estate) 13.5% alcohol, as well as an alluring sweetness and accessibility. It probably will tighten up over the next few years. Nevertheless, it is a profound Chateau Margaux that brings to mind a hypothetical blend of the 1982 and 1990. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2035."
Steve Tanzer's International Wine Cellar 96
"Full, saturated red-ruby. Knockout nose combines redcurrant, tropical chocolate, leather, woodsmoke and nutty oak with exotic chocolate mint and coffee liqueur; still manages to retain floral lift even in this beastly vintage. Then wonderfully fat, sweet and full, even if it comes across as almost heavy following the ineffable 2005 and 2004 examples. But "relatively inelegant" for Margaux still suggests a degree of refinement that few chateaux can match in the greatest vintages. A hugely rich and dense wine that finishes with elevated but ripe tannins and great length, with a subtle suggestion of dry spices. Pontallier says the terroir will take over in 20 years, "like with the '82." Splendid."
Neil Martin, Wine Journal, eRobert Parker 95+
Tasted blind at Farr Vintner?s Left Bank tasting. The Château Margaux 2003 has closed down since I last encountered it. Much more tertiary on the nose with dried herbs, sous-bois and a touch of leather; it finds it difficult to attain the femininity it showed its youth. Nonetheless, the palate is very harmonious with supple tannins, lovely expressive red-berried fruit with blackberry, boysenberry and scorched earth. Harmonious and wily on the finish. Lovely?and improving in the glass. Tasted October 2010.

"Backward, powerful, and extremely tannic, the dense purple-colored 2003 Mouton-Rothschild, a blend of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot, fashioned from yields of 28 hectoliters per hectare, with a finished alcohol of 12.9%, improves dramatically with aeration. With full-bodied, meaty, powerful, dry flavors as well as a huge finish, this high class wine should be at its finest between 2012-2040+. During its sojourn in barrel, it reminded me of a hypothetical blend of the 1982 and 1986 Moutons, but since bottling, it appears different, and even more tannic than those two vintages. I still believe the finest recent Mouton-Rothschild is the 2000."
Wine Spectator 94
Blackberry, cherry and currant with just a hint of toasted oak. Full-bodied, with silky tannins and a lovely combination of ripe fruit and vanilla character. Goes on and on. Long and very stylish. Balanced and refined. Best after 2011.
Neil Martin, Wine Journal, eRobert Parker 95
This is the best showing for Mouton ?03, although I wonder whether I was seduced by its ostentation? It has an exotic bouquet with aromas of mulberry, briary, dried blood and cooked meats, fine delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, suppler red-berried earthy fruit, minerals, very harmonious and focused with a feminine, supremely well-focused finish that caresses and seduces the senses. "The debut vintage, the 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon, will be bottled, without fining or filtration, in January, 2007. An amazing effort, it boasts a deep purple color as well as a gorgeous perfume of scorched earth (reminiscent of a Graves wine from Bordeaux), espresso roast, creme de cassis, licorice, new saddle leather, flowers, and chocolate. This powerful, rich wine cuts a broad swath across the palate, but is neither heavy nor excessive. A beautiful integration of acidity, wood, alcohol, and tannin result in an impressively endowed, fabulously concentrated, compelling Cabernet Sauvignon that should drink reasonably well young, yet age for 15-20 years."

Deep, bright red. Offers an extra dimension on the nose, with captivating sappy red fruits, minerals, blood orange, clove, menthol and bitter chocolate. Enters the mouth thick and opulent, then wonderfully dense and seamless in the middle, with compelling sweetness and piquant minerality. The back half of the wine shows the powerful, structured side of the vintage, finishing with major tannins and an impression of brooding energy. This may well merit a higher score with a decade or so of bottle aging.
Allen Meadows, Burghound 96
This is also extremely floral with a reserved nose that is an airy, spicy and ripe mélange of red and blue pinot fruit that displays really lovely violet and rose petal notes that are picked up by the minerally, intense and harmonious flavors that are beautifully proportioned and are blessed with ample amounts of dry extract on the essence of pinot and explosive, energetic and hugely long yet incredible precise finish that is also built on a base of firm minerality. This is almost exotic in character yet everything is in beautiful concordance. In a word, great.
