Wine Spectator 88
Delicious and balanced, showing exciting earthy, white truffle flavors that add complexity to the honey and spice notes. Medium intensity.
Robert Parker 87
This looks to be a good Suduiraut. A medium golden color, with a very honeyed, rich, floral bouquet, this full-bodied wine is not as profound as the other 1983s. Sweet, with fine honeyed flavors, this is an elegant, graceful Suduiraut with plenty of character. However, given the vintage, I had expected even more.

Robert Parker 93
The 1988 remains a very backward wine. Full-bodied and powerful, extremely rich and dense, it may be the least evolved 1988. The nose offers enticing coconut, orange, vanilla, and honeyed scents. The flavors are highly extracted. The wine's acidity and youthfulness suggest this wine needs another 5-10 years of cellaring. It should keep for 30 years.
Wine Spectator 94
Sweet, ripe and loaded with honey, toffee, carameland nutmeg-scented pear and apricot aromas andflavors. Generous fig and tobacco notes echo onthe long finish. A silky, supple, succulent winefrom France that should improve through at least 2000.

1989 Raymond-Lafon (750ml)

Robert Parker 91
The 1989 exhibits aromas of honeyed pineapple/tropical fruit and toasty new oak, as well as an exotic, flashy perfume that is not as pronounced in either the 1990 or 1988. The 1989 exhibits less botrytis than the other two vintages. The wine possesses an opulent, full-bodied, exotic, lavishly rich personality, moderate sweetness, and huge quantity of extract, glycerin, and alcohol in its finish. The wine is also extremely young and unevolved. Anticipated maturity: 2000-2025.
Wine Spectator 90
Stands out in this crowd because of its stylish lilac, violet, floral, rose petal scents that delight from start to finish; medium-to-full body and sweetness plus a long finish.

Everything you want in a bottle-aged sparkling wine. Bold, ripe and spicy, with honey, pear, nut and vanilla flavors that turn rich and creamy on the finish. Impressive for its finesse and concentration.

Wine Spectator 87
Elegant tobacco, berry and mineral aromas and flavors, medium body and tannins and a silky finish. Drinkable now.
Gambero Rosso 2*
"If we had been going to award a special prize for the best cellar in Montalcino this year, then we might very well have plumped for Tenuta Col d'Orcia, above all because of two excellent wines that demonstrate just how dependable the marvellous estate has become?...This wine has always shone like a beacon to lovers of great traditional-style Brunello, but the '90 is in a class of its own. The nose is more concentrated, with greater breadth and intensity and a range of aromas which takes you from ripe fruit to flowery notes and hints of cocoa and oak. The entry on the palate is even more positive than usual and the flavours are so full and lingering that they came out of a parallel tsting against Giovanni Cnterno's legendary Barolo Montfortino Riserva '90 with flying colours."

Based on the '81, '82, '84, and '85 we rate this estate as excellent.
Gambero Rosso
"As well as being the driving force behind Il Poggione, Pierluigi Talenti has also for the past thirthy years owned his own estate at Pian di Conte, a short distance from the mediaeval "Borgo" of Sant'Angelo in Colle. The winery may not be huge, but in the past Talenti has presented our b=panels with well made products with reliable quality wich is the common feature of all the wines under his supervision." 1998

The 1990 Campaccio, a blend of Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon, displays a big, smoky, herb, and blackcurrant-scented nose, superb richness, a huge, chewy, full-bodied palate, admirable purity, and dazzling length. Supple enough to be drunk now, it promises to last for 10-15 years.

This opaque purple-colored, unfiltered Merlot ( there is 16% Cabernet Franc in the blend ), offers up a sweet, chocolatety, rich, berry-scented nose, soft, medium-bodied flavors with a creamy texture, and tannin in the finish. The wine exhibts fine purity and an authentic Merlot varietal character.

...the rich, sweet, open-knit bouquet has gone into hibernation, leaving a tightly knit wine that is frozen in place, reluctantly offering up aromas of black fruits and smoke. Tannic, austere, and more in step with the 1988, this appears to be a vintage that will require more initial cellaring than I had anticipated.

"The 1993 exhibits an elegant, more laid back style than several previous vintages. The deep ruby/purple color is followed by copious amounts of toasty, smoky new oak, and attractive currant aromas. The wine possesses sweet, ripe fruit, medium body, moderate tannin, and a long, nicely-textured, spicy finish. It may develop into an outstanding wine with another 2-4 years of cellaring. It should age well for 15+ years."

Wine Spectator 90
Amazingly silky, boasting mouth-coating ripe tannins, medium body and beautiful mineral, earth, currant and plum flavors. The wood is surprisingly well integrated for a red wine from this estate. Better than a barrel sample tasted earlier this year.
Allen Meadows, Burghound 88
...the Clos de Santenots offers beautiful fruit, dense, rich flavors and a long finish. While it is not particularly complex or nuanced, it does offer undeniable style and a certain seductiveness.

Enticing aromas of dried cherries, tea leaves and black olives with a hint of toasty oak. Very appealing, pure and persistent flavors with a long, complex, fine-grained finish.

A wine with decadent and alluring autumnal aromas and flavors, medium body, chewy tannins and a rich finish.
Gambero Rosso
The team at Badia a Coltibuono looks like a winner..Meanwhile the Sangioveto, the most representative of the Badia a Coltibuono wines, notched up another Two Glass rating for its extremely decent ¿94 vintage¿this Sangioveto has satisfying texture and attractive complexity.

This is one of the most dazzling Merlots they have yet produced. While closed initially, the wine opens quickly in the glass. The dark ruby/purple color is followed by smoky, chocolatey, and black cherry aromas with new oak in the background. In the mouth, this wine is full-bodied, with explosive levels of glycerin and richness on the back of the palate. Dense, concentated, tannic, and angular, it is capable of lasting 15+ years.

Robert Parker 87
The qualitative equivalent of the 1993, although more backward, tannic, and weighty, this dark ruby/purple-colored, medium-bodied, spicy, rich wine is well-made. It is soft for a 1994, yet capable of lasting 15-18 years. Some tannin in the finish suggests that purchasers should give it 2-3 years of cellaring.
Wine Spectator 89
"Complex aromas of spices, berries and plums, with fine, silky tannins and a caressing finish. Medium body. Hard not to drink it now

Long-time readers are aware of my admiration for the husband and wife oenologist team of Dany and Michel Rolland. Michel is more visible in the international scene as he has performed magic at numerous estates in Italy, Spain, Argentina, California, and, of course, France. Rolland's success has not come without a price, as he now must endure an unprecedented level of criticism from a whining group of underachievers that appears to have one complaint - Rolland produces better wine than they do. A tell-tale Merlot/Pomerol nose of mocha, chocolate, tobacco, and sweet black-cherry/plummy fruit is followed by a medium-bodied wine with moderate tannin, excellent purity, outstanding richness, and a sweet finish. This wine requires 2-3 years of cellaring. Anticipated maturity: 2000-2012.
Neil Martin, Wine Journal, eRobert Parker 91-93
Lovely blueberry, mineral nose that has great purity and weight. Palate is backward, just becoming accessible. Full-bodied, rich, almost coarse tannins but very concentrated. Black high-toned fruits. Good length. Will be superb. 5-8 years. A great success for the vintage. Tasted May 2002.

The medium ruby-colored 1994 Brunello di Montalcino reveals an amber hue at the edge. The wine's sweet, expansive fruit, sexy, open-knit, velvety texture, and flavors of Asian spices, cedar, black fruits, and earth make for a captivating concoction.
Wine Spectator 88-90

I was impressed with Robert Groffier's 1995s. They displayed good ripeness, concentration and structure. It is the first vintage where his wines will not be subjected to either a fining or filtration. I have purchased, drunk and cellared some of his previous vintages (and sold them when I worked in retail) and have seen the heights this domaine is capable of achieving. - Pierre Rovani
Steve Tanzer's International Wine Cellar
"Medium red. Redcurrant, leather and smoke on the nose. Lush and sweet, with good flavor definition but modest nuance. Ripe and flattering. The tannins are dustier than those of the '96."

The excellent 1995 Chateauneuf du Pape displays an intensely fragrant nose of kirsch, pepper, Provencal herbs, and earth. Medium to full-bodied, round, generous, and supple, this meaty wine can be drunk now as well as over the next 7-10 years. I
Steve Tanzer's International Wine Cellar 90
Good full red. Riper, more roasted nose than the above, with grenache-dominated aromas of cherry, game, pepper, flowers and tar. Gamey, ripe and expansive in the mouth, with deep flavors of woodsmoke and pepper and plenty of alcoholic clout. Serious and dense rather than simply ripe and sweet.

Robert Parker 90
The 1995 Lagrange is similar to the 1996, but the fruit is sweeter, the acidity lower, and the wine less marked by Cabernet Sauvignon. The color is a deep ruby/purple. The wine boasts a roasted herb, charcoal, black currant, mineral, and new oak-scented nose. Medium to full-bodied and ripe, with copious quantities of jammy black cherry and cassis flavors presented in a medium-bodied, low acid, moderately tannic style, this well-endowed, purely made wine requires cellaring.
Wine Spectator 91
Licorice, blackberry and mineral undertones. Full-bodied, with silky and refined tannins. Long finish. Just about ready. Balanced and harmonious.--'95/'96 Bordeaux retrospective.

"A highly individualistic red, this exotic, medium-bodied wine has plenty of everything, including iodine, blood and salt notes. Balanced, with ripe fruit, deep flavors and a super intense finish that should be opulent in a few years."
Steve Tanzer's International Wine Cellar 91
"Saturated ruby-red, a full shade deeper than the Marsannay Ouzeloy. Sauvage, superripe aromas of spicy black fruits, leather, minerals and licorice. Very concentrated and powerfully structured, with primal dark berry flavor. But quite closed in the middle. The tannins are tougher here but appear to be supported by the wine's strong material."
