This is unquestionably one of the greatest wines made in the twentieth century. In the two dozen tastings where I have had the 1961 La Chapelle, I rated it 100 points twenty times. The opaque purple/garnet color is accompanied by spectacular aromatics representing the essence of old vine Syrah (smoked meat, pepper, hoisin sauce, and soy). As the wine sits in the glass, notions of pepper, new saddle leather, grilled meat, and awesome levels of blackberry, plum, and black currant liqueur-like notes emerge. Extremely unctuous, with compelling concentration and purity, this full-bodied, seamless, mouthfilling 1961 is truly immortal. It still possesses a freshness and vigor that defy its nearly forty years of age. It should continue to drink well for two more decades. Prodigious stuff!

However, in the three separate tastings I noted that the wine is losing its sweetness, and just beginning to reveal acidity and a tannic bitterness in the finish. This fabulous, blockbuster has been totally unevolved since bottling, but at the Jaboulet tasting, it was beginning to reveal some of its formidable potential. The 1990 has been a consistently perfect wine for much of its life. However, it appears to have turned the corner and lost some of its most profound aspects. It is still an immortal Chateauneuf du Pape, with a dense ruby/purple color in addition to a gorgeous nose of licorice, white flowers, blueberries, and blackberries. The wine is heady, with high alcohol, an unctuous texture, and an extraordinary ripe, concentrated finish. However, some bottles tasted seem far older than others. I don't know whether it is a bottle variation problem or a question of improper storage. Nevertheless, pristine bottles remain candidates for perfection. Catherine and Sophie Armenier continue to fashion one of France's greatest wines. There are 750 cases produced from 80% Grenache, 10% Mourvedre, and 10% miscellaneous varietals.

In his modest manner, Bonneau claims 1995 to be a "bon millesime" (vintage). Usually when Henri Bonneau says "bon" it means great. The more concentrated cuvees appear to merit a Reserve des Celestins classification as they are black/purple-colored, extremely broad, full-bodied, with huge alcohol, and unctuous textures.

The great glories of this house are its Cote Roties, of which there are now five separate offerings. Guigal believes 1995 may turn out to his greatest vintage for Cote Rotie. It is also the first vintage that his son, Philippe, did the harvest and has helped with the vinification and elevage. I should also note that it is the debut vintage for his newest acquisition, Chateau d'Ampuis. Guigal's 1995s have aged magnificently in cask, with the three single vineyards candidates for perfection. 1995 is also an impressive vintage for the Cuvee Blonde et Brune. Approximately a half dozen component parts of the 1995 Cote Rotie Blonde et Brune were tasted. While it is more backward and structured than the 1994, it is a powerful, sexy, complete, rich, full-bodied style of Cote Rotie that should be the finest Blonde et Brune since the 1991. It will have 10-12 years of life. Guigal is one of the cellars where the wines always taste better after they are bottled than they do from cask, although as the scores in this segment indicate, some profound wines can be found in the 1994, 1995, and 1996 vintages Chez Guigal.

It appears I may have seriously underestimated the quality of the 1997 Rayas when tasted from barrel. Tasted twice from bottle, it unquestionably merits a 90-point score. It is rich, deep, and intense. It is an elegant, ripe, evolved, forward, medium-weight Rayas with copious raspberry and cherry fruit. It should drink well young and last for 10-15 years.

This is unquestionably the greatest wine Bonneau has produced since 1990. Tipping the scales at 16.2 - 16.4% natural alcohol, this offering, which has been resting in various sized old barrels since its birth, continues to concentrate itself. It is simply a magnificent wine of extraordinary flavor dimension. A dark plum/garnet color is followed by an exceptionally sweet perfume of a liqueur of aged beef intermixed with black currants, kirsch, pepper, spice box, and herbes de Provence. Massive concentration conceals some lofty tannin, but the tannin is sweet and virtually buried by the plentiful glycerin and extract. A spectacular effort, it is another modern day legend from this idiosyncratic producer who will not change his ways for the modern world ... and why should he? All of us who love wine are so much better off because of him. Because of its size and sweetness, the 1998 should be relatively drinkable upon release, but it has three decades of life ahead of it. 98-100 pts.

94-97 points. Deep red-ruby. Knockout nose combines red fruit liqueur, plum, fig, minerals and graphite. Lush, thick and freakishly deep; this has fruit of steel. Like a liqueur in the mouth, hardly surprising in light of the wine's 16% alcohol. Finishes with palate-saturating persistence, with the wine's substantial tannins buried in fruit. This will be a monument.

....1999 Hermitage had been bottled only 24 hours before my visit. It exhibits fabulous texture, purity and sweetness as well as a finish that lasts for nearly a minute. There is high tannin, remarkably rich, concentrated extract and tell-tale Hermitage fruit characteristics (blackberries, cassis). minerals and spice. Representing the essence of Syrah. It is the greatest vintage Chave has produced since 1990. While it requires 7-10 years of cellaring, it will last for 4 - 5 decades.

Surprisingly, the 2000 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Vieilles Vignes is even bigger and more powerful (15.5% alcohol) than the 2001. One of the classics of the vintage, it boasts a dense purple color as well as a fantastic nose of kirsch liqueur, blackberries, blueberries, and flowers. It possesses a fabulous multi layered texture, admirable purity, and a 50-55 second finish. In spite of its power, high levels of glycerin, and lofty alcohol, there is a sense of elegance and lightness that is uncanny for a wine of this depth and richness. Anticipated maturity: now-2018. The Cuvee Vieilles Vignes is fashioned primarily from 80-year old Grenache (95% of the blend), and 5% Mourvedre, all from the rock-strewn sector of Chateauneuf du Pape called Le Crau. Half of the cuvee is destemmed, and it is given such progressive techniques as pigeage, with malolactic done in foudre, and 10% new oak barrels utilized in its upbringing. Michel Maret is one of the new stars of the southern Rhone. I am glad to see his wines properly represented in the United States.

This family domain is located in the hills of Saint Maurice and Vinsobres Villages in Drôme Provençale and is the résult of four générations of winegrowers. In 1987 Hubert Valayer buy and modernised the caves of Château de Deurre (16 century).The red cepages are traditional blends: grenache, syrah, mourvèdre, carignan and cinsault. The Rabasses, however is 100% old vine Grenache from 50 year old vines. The 2000 Les Rabassess will remind you of the best old vine Chateauneauf-du-Papes at a fraction of the cost. The blend is generally 85% Grenache and equal parts Syrah and Mourvedre. Its opaque purple color is followed by a sumptuous perfume of creme de cassis, kirsch liqueur, licorice, plums, minerals, and smoke. Mammoth in the mouth, but surprisingly structured and tannic for a 2000, it is more evolved than its 2001 counterpart. This profound Chateauneuf should evolve slowly and age magnificently for two decades. It is a monumental effort, but patience will be a virtue. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2025.

The 2000 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes carries its 15% alcohol well. Though a compelling offering, and undoubtedly one of the wines of the vintage, it does not possess that magical extra dimension of greatness found in the 2001. Nevertheless, I would be thrilled to drink it anytime ... anywhere! The floral component of white flowers intermixed with melted licorice, blackberry liqueur, plums, and prunes is followed by an expansive, sexy, silky-textured, full-bodied Chateauneuf with great depth, purity, and lusciousness. As with its younger sibling, the finish lasts for nearly a minute. Again, it is a singular expression of Chateauneuf du Pape that is totally different than its peers. Strikingly rich, dense, and opulent, with a breathtaking array of complexity and flavors, its low acidity, ripe tannin, and wealth of glycerin suggest drinking it now and over the next 15-16 years.

The 2003 Beaucastel Chateauneuf du Pape turned out as well as I could have hoped and is certainly an outstanding wine, deep ruby/purple with a tight but promising nose of black fruits, loamy, earthy notes intermixed with pepper, smoke, licorice, and dried herbs. The wine is somewhat closed in the mouth (but it had been bottled 30 days prior to my visit), has full bodied, moderately high, slightly rustic tannins, but big-impact flavors with plenty of texture, density, and purity. Give this wine 3-5 years of bottle age, and drink it over the following 20 years.

Young and tight, with garrigue and roasted game aromas peeking out from a core of ripe black currant, plum and fig fruit. Lots of toast tobacco and iron as well. The finish is well-endowed with tannins, but they are ripe and pure. Best from 2008 through 2025.

Deep, dense red color. Vibrant aromas of aromas of cherry, wild herbs, fresh flowers and minerals. Energetic and sweet, showing no overripe qualities; offers a silky, suave texture and wonderfully pure red berry, fresh plum, kirsch and fig flavors. Those with an aversion to the funky, gamey character that can characterize Beaucastel in "typical" vintages owe it to themselves to check this out. Clearly, the Perrins know what to do with grenache, even if it's not their favorite grape.

Black purple to the rim, with an extraordinary nose of smoke, camphor, blackberry, cassis, sweet cherry, white flowers, licorice, and Chinese black tea, the wine has superb richness, huge tannins, massive concentration, and a monster finish. Forget this wine for 5-8 years and drink it over the following 35 or more.
