1949 Jaboulet Hermitage La Chapelle (375ml) |
$2,055.00
|
||||
| Robert Parker 94 | |||||
| A dazzling wine, the dark garnet/amber color of the 1949 La Chapelle is accompanied by aromas of molasses, exotic Asian spices, roasted duck, prune, and blackberry liqueur. In the mouth, this expansive, full-bodied, exotic wine exhibited terrific sweetness, awesome glycerin levels, sweet tannin, and, in addition to the aforementioned aromatic characteristics, coffee flavors. Full-bodied as well as extremely fresh, this offering not only drank fabulously well out of the bottle, but held up in the glass until I couldn't defer my gratification any longer. This was the first time I tasted the 1949 La Chapelle, so I do not know what other bottles have revealed, but this was a profound example of a mature La Chapelle that has lived 50+ years with nary a blemish. | |||||
| Wine Spectator 99 | |||||
| This is 50 years old but still young and in perfect condition. Much riper than the '53, it's full-bodied and loaded with terroir and concentrated plum, mineral, blackberry and chestnut. Balanced and sweet-tasting, with firm but ripe tannins and a long finish.--La Chapelle vertical. Drink now through 2030 | |||||
| Neil Martin, Wine Journal, eRobert Parker | |||||
| "With respect to the wines, there were two bottles encountered earlier this year that were the apotheosis of fermented grape juice...an astounding Hermitage La Chapelle 1949 from Paul Jaboulet that silenced an awe-struck table. | |||||

1985 Jaboulet Hermitage La Chapelle (750ml) |
$155.00

| Robert Parker 91 | |||||
| A saturated dark plum/garnet color with amber at the edge is followed by an attractive smoky, underbrush, and truffle-scented wine with coffee, smoke, cedar, and jammy cassis/plum-like fruit. As the wine sits in the glass, notes of Chinese black tea, pepper, and soy emerge. There is surprising tannin and austerity in the finish, but the aromatics and attack were convincingly rich and intense. | |||||
| Neil Martin, Wine Journal, eRobert Parker 95 | |||||
| A clear, more limpid colour compared to the early 1980?s. The nose has good intensity with notes of animal fur, liquorices, cigar box and smoke. Good definition but it takes a while to awake from its slumber. The palate is medium-bodied, superb balance and delineation with great focus. Less stalky than earlier La Chapelles, very harmonious with good grip and firm, solid structure to counterbalance the ripe leathery red-berried fruits. Real finesse, fleshy and meaty on the finish. Great length. Probably at its peak now, this is a great wine. Drink now-2018 Tasted March 2008. | |||||
1985 Vieux Telegraphe Chateauneuf du Pape (750ml) |
$133.00
|
||||
| Robert Parker 88 | |||||
| A consistently delicious example of Vieux-Telegraphe, this spicy, fruity, exuberant, flamboyant wine is full-bodied, juicy, and succulent. Although it lacks the extra dimension of flavor and complexity necessary to merit an outstanding score, it consistently provides a pleasing, mouthfilling glass of textbook Vieux-Telegraphe. | |||||
1990 Marcoux Chateauneuf du Pape Vielles Vignes (750ml) |
$615.00
|
||||
| Robert Parker 96 | |||||
| The 1990 has been a consistently perfect wine for much of its life. However, it appears to have turned the corner and lost some of its most profound aspects. It is still an immortal Chateauneuf du Pape, with a dense ruby/purple color in addition to a gorgeous nose of licorice, white flowers, blueberries, and blackberries. The wine is heady, with high alcohol, an unctuous texture, and an extraordinary ripe, concentrated finish. However, some bottles tasted seem far older than others. I don't know whether it is a bottle variation problem or a question of improper storage. Nevertheless, pristine bottles remain candidates for perfection. Catherine and Sophie Armenier continue to fashion one of France's greatest wines. There are 750 cases produced from 80% Grenache, 10% Mourvedre, and 10% miscellaneous varietals. | |||||
1991 Chapoutier Chateauneuf du Pape Barbe Rac (750ml) |
$57.00
|
||||
| Robert Parker | |||||
| " The 1991 Chateauneuf du Pape Barbe Rac is one of the two or three best wines I tasted in Chateauneuf du Pape from this dreadful vintage. It displays a deep ruby color, a spicy, herbaceous-scented nose, and rich, curranty fruit." | |||||

| ...the rich, sweet, open-knit bouquet has gone into hibernation, leaving a tightly knit wine that is frozen in place, reluctantly offering up aromas of black fruits and smoke. Tannic, austere, and more in step with the 1988, this appears to be a vintage that will require more initial cellaring than I had anticipated. | |||||

1993 Guigal Cote Rotie La Landonne (750ml) |
$181.00
|
||||
| Robert Parker 88 | |||||
| The most tannic of the three famous single vineyards is the 1993 Cote Rotie La Landonne. It is amazingly powerful and rich for the vintage, and reveals more fruit and intensity than it did prior to bottling. It exhibits a saturated ruby color, and copious amounts of pepper, tar, olives, licorice, and black cherry fruit in the nose. It remains the most muscular and structured of the three wines, and has managed to avoid the hollowness and vegetal character that plague so many 1993 northern Rhones. | |||||
1993 Guigal Cote Rotie La Mouline (750ml) |
$181.00
|
||||
| Robert Parker 88 | |||||
| The 1993 Cote Rotie La Mouline exhibits a deep ruby color, light to medium body, soft, elegant aromas of toasty new oak, and a short finish with some unmistakable herbaceousness. The La Mouline character does come through in this supple wine, which is best drunk over the next 7-8 years. | |||||

| A dark ruby/plum color, the bouquet offers scents of damp forest, underbrush, prune, truffles, and roasted meats. Medium-bodied, soft, attractively rich, fresh, and vigorous, this excellent La Chapelle can be drunk now, or aged for 15 more years. | |||||
| Wine Spectator 90 | |||||
| A hot summer and thick-skinned grapes seem to have saved the vintage from the bad rain. This impressive '94 shows balance and refined tannins, but the finish is a bit chewy and hard now. Beautifully fresh and clean, with subtle vanilla, blackberry, spice, mocha and chocolate.-- | |||||

$57.00
|

| Robert Parker 88 | |||||
| The excellent 1995 Chateauneuf du Pape displays an intensely fragrant nose of kirsch, pepper, Provencal herbs, and earth. Medium to full-bodied, round, generous, and supple, this meaty wine can be drunk now as well as over the next 7-10 years. I | |||||

| Good full red. Riper, more roasted nose than the above, with grenache-dominated aromas of cherry, game, pepper, flowers and tar. Gamey, ripe and expansive in the mouth, with deep flavors of woodsmoke and pepper and plenty of alcoholic clout. Serious and dense rather than simply ripe and sweet. | |||||

| "The moderately intense bouquet exhibits plenty of ripe blackberry and cherry fruit, in addition to spicy, mineral characteristics. There is considerable weight and volume, but the wine is tight, and nearly impenetrable, leaving an impression of a large deep, four-square monolith in need of 7-10 years of cellaring." | |||||

1998 Jaboulet Hermitage La Chapelle (750ml) |
$109.00
|
||||
| Robert Parker 90-92 | |||||
| Soft and precocious is the 1998. Its deep ruby/purple color is followed by a ripe blackberry and cassis-scented nose that has not yet begun to take on the secondary nuances of leather, dried herbs, and foresty notes. A full-bodied wine, it has a sweet attack, high tannin, and excellent concentration and purity. If my instincts are right, it will require 6-8 years of bottle age, and should keep for 2-3 decades. | |||||
| Wine Spectator 96 | |||||
| What a great wine. Full-bodied, with crushed berry, smoke and grilled aromas, all presented quite subtly. Stands out for its natural, down-to-earth taste of clean, pure, shining fruit. A pleasure to drink. Tempting now. Best from 2003 through 2015. | |||||
| Steve Tanzer's International Wine Cellar 92 | |||||
| Red-ruby. Expressive nose combines currant, roast coffee, chicory, underbrush and smoke. Suave yet penetrating in the mouth, with complex flavors of redcurrant, iron, minerals, smoke and tobacco. Finishes with dusty tannins and excellent length, though there still some acidity to be absorbed. This is showing well now, though its slightly more advanced aromatics suggest it will not be as long-lived as the '99. | |||||
1998 Rayas Chateauneuf du Pape Reserve (750ml) |
$315.00
|
||||
| Robert Parker 94 | |||||
| "The color is medium to deep ruby, and the bouquet offers aromas of ripe strawberry and cherry candy, with kirsch liqueur thrown in for additional interest. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and fat, with high levels of sweet fruit, a velvety texture, multiple dimensions, and an explosive finish. It is an undeniably sexy, compelling Rayas that is already performing exceptionally well, despite having been bottled only a few months ago." | |||||
| Wine Spectator 94 | |||||
| Deceptive because this isn't a showy wine-the aromas are soily, minerally, and shy-but there is amazingly intense ripe and lovely fruit here. Full-bodied, the ripenes of its black and red fruit coats and seduceds the palate. A symphony of flavors that plays harmoniously. | |||||

2000 La Vieille Julienne V.V. CNDP (750ml) |
$220.00
|
||||
| Robert Parker 97 | |||||
| The 2000 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes (15% alcohol) emerges from a cold terroir in the northern sector of the appellation. The blend is generally 85% Grenache and equal parts Syrah and Mourvedre. Its opaque purple color is followed by a sumptuous perfume of creme de cassis, kirsch liqueur, licorice, plums, minerals, and smoke. Mammoth in the mouth, but surprisingly structured and tannic for a 2000, it is more evolved than its 2001 counterpart. This profound Chateauneuf should evolve slowly and age magnificently for two decades. It is a monumental effort, but patience will be a virtue. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2025. | |||||
2000 Marcoux Chateaunuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes (750ml) |
$220.00
|
||||
| Robert Parker 96 | |||||
| The 2000 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes carries its 15% alcohol well. Though a compelling offering, and undoubtedly one of the wines of the vintage, it does not possess that magical extra dimension of greatness found in the 2001. Nevertheless, I would be thrilled to drink it anytime ... anywhere! The floral component of white flowers intermixed with melted licorice, blackberry liqueur, plums, and prunes is followed by an expansive, sexy, silky-textured, full-bodied Chateauneuf with great depth, purity, and lusciousness. As with its younger sibling, the finish lasts for nearly a minute. Again, it is a singular expression of Chateauneuf du Pape that is totally different than its peers. Strikingly rich, dense, and opulent, with a breathtaking array of complexity and flavors, its low acidity, ripe tannin, and wealth of glycerin suggest drinking it now and over the next 15-16 years. | |||||

| Dark red. Aromas of raspberry, coffee, mocha, flowers and exotic woodsmoke. Sweet and fairly pliant but powerfully structured and backward, with a strong impression of extract. Finishes with pepper and oak notes and fairly fine tannins. But this big boy needs a few years of additional bottle aging. | |||||
2003 Beaucastel Chateauneuf du Pape Hommage a J. Perrin (750ml) |
$410.00
|
||||
| Robert Parker 95 | |||||
| The 2003 Beaucastel Chateauneuf du Pape Hommage a Jacques Perrin has turned out even better than I thought last year. Black purple to the rim, with an extraordinary nose of smoke, camphor, blackberry, cassis, sweet cherry, white flowers, licorice, and Chinese black tea, the wine has superb richness, huge tannins, massive concentration, and a monster finish. Forget this wine for 5-8 years and drink it over the following 35 or more. | |||||
2003 Jaboulet Hermitage La Chapelle (750ml) |
$170.00
|
||||
| Wine Spectator 96 | |||||
| Deceptively graceful at first with a Burgundian-like perfume, this quickly delivers a torrent of fruit-blackberry, boysenberry and black currant-that cascades over itself, pushed from behind by flavors of mocha, mineral, tar and violets. Long, sweet and pure through a densely structured finish. | |||||
| Robert Parker 95 | |||||
| The finest example of this cuvee since 1990, the 2003 Hermitage La Chapelle (50,000 bottles rather than the normal 96,000+ were produced) possesses an inky/purple color as well as a tremendous bouquet of creme de cassis, crushed flowers, truffles, and licorice. Full-bodied and powerful (15% natural alcohol) with good freshness and definition, this big, rich, dense, reassuringly great La Chapelle should be cellared for 5-8 years, and drunk over the following 20-25. | |||||
2005 Beaucastel Chateauneuf du Pape (750ml) |
$120.00
|
||||
| Robert Parker 94 | |||||
| The 2005 Beaucastel Chateauneuf du Pape is a wine that probably needs 7-10 years of bottle age. Possibly the most backward and closed Beaucastel made since the 1995, the wine has very high tannins, seems totally closed aromatically, but in the mouth is a weighty wine exhibiting a dense ruby/purple color and tight aromatics consisting of new saddle leather, porcini, meat juices, licorice, tar, and black fruits. The wine is full-bodied, powerful, very tannic, and structured in a dramatically masculine, ageworthy style. This is one for the younger generation or those with considerable patience. I can¿t see it being close to drinkable before 2014 and lasting up to 30 or more years. | |||||
| Steve Tanzer's International Wine Cellar 93-96 | |||||
| "Deep ruby. Intense dark berry scents expand and deepen with air, picking up dusky espresso and licorice tones. Lush, powerful and sweet, with impressively concentrated, pure dark berry flavors and supple, finely integrated tannins. There's a great fruit/tannin balance here, and the supple finish boasts impressively concentrated and remarkably persistent cherry and blackberry fruit." Josh Raynolds | |||||

| Really dense and locked up now, this is packed with dark fig, currant and blackberry fruit shrouded by layers of tar, hot stone, bittersweet licorice and espresso. The long, dense finish has a great tug of iron buried within it. | |||||
2005 Chapoutier Hermitage Greffieux (750ml) |
$181.00
|
||||
| Robert Parker 94 | |||||
| The 2005 Ermitage Les Greffieux is a beauty, but it has to take a backseat to the 2006. It has an admirable creme de cassis note, an inky purple color, plenty of meat, smoke, steel, and black fruits in a dense, fleshy style. It is by far the most forward of the 2005 Ermitages. That¿s not to say there's any deficiency in tannin lurking underneath the wine's density and richness. It should evolve for 20-25 years. | |||||
| Wine Spectator 95 | |||||
| Ripe and very fresh, with bright floral, licorice snap and cassis bush notes leading the way for plum sauce, blackberry and raspberrry fruit flavors. Long, taut finish shows fine structure of the vintage. 46 cases imported | |||||

| Opaque purple. Hugely aromatic, alluring bouquet of red berry preserves, violet, rose, smoked meat, minerals and black pepper. 2005 Charvin Chateauneuf du Pape (750ml) |
$66.00
|

| Wine Spectator 94 | |||||
| Lush and forward for the vintage, with dark currant and fig paste flavors backed by licorice, coffee, garrigue and braised beef notes. The long, smoky finish has a lingering touch of mesquite. The profile is black fruit, but the structure is remarkably elegant for the vintage, with lovely poise. | |||||
| Robert Parker 93 | |||||
| The 2005 Chateauneuf du Pape is superb, but it has to take a back seat to the 2006. Dark ruby with notes of underbrush, the seaweed wrapper nori, kirsch liqueur, and a bit of pepper and spice box, it is deep and broad, with outstanding concentration, moderately high tannin, and a nicely structured, pure mouthfeel. | |||||

The 2005 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee de la Reine des Bois boasts a dense purple color, a full-bodied, opulent style, moderately high tannin, sensational concentration, and abundant aromas and flavors of spring flowers, blueberries, blackberries, cherries, and spice. It is a meaty, fleshy, tannic effort that brings to mind the 1998. A brilliant wine for the vintage, it should be exceptionally long lived. | |||||
| Wine Spectator 95 | |||||

| Robert Parker 93-95 | |||||
| "The 2006 Chateauneuf du Pape Les Origines is one of the vintage¿s most profound wines. Inky purple to the rim, showing some subtle influence of barriques, the wine has an impressive nose of chocolate, smoke, roasted meats, blueberries, and jammy black cherries with some licorice and smoke. The wine is full-bodied, powerful, but has silky tannins and good acidity. This wine should be drinkable upon release and last for 15 or more years." | |||||
