| Steve Tanzer's International Wine Cellar 91 | |||||
| Subtle, reticent nose combines spicy oak and roasted meat. Lovely gamey sweetness in the mouth, with sound acids and a spicy character. Full, ripe and quite long. (Tasting note from March/April 1996) | |||||
1985 Pesquera Tinto (750ml) |
$44.00

1991 Vega Sicilia Unico (750ml) |
$360.00
|
||||
| Robert Parker 95 | |||||
| The current release of Vega Sicilia¿s flagship offering, the 1991 Unico Reserva, will have to satisfy lovers of this great Spanish red until the 1994 is released in 2005. The 1991 is a gorgeous, deep ruby/purple-colored, remarkably youthful effort offering sweet vanilla notes intertwined with black currants, cherry liqueur, flowers, spice box, and tobacco leaves. Full-bodied and intense, with sweet tannin, outstanding density as well as purity, and a layered mouthfeel, this unevolved 1991 needs another 3-4 years of cellaring; it should last for 20-25 years. It¿s a wine of great elegance as opposed to power. | |||||
1995 Pagos Viejos, Artadi, Rioja (750ml) |
$114.00
|
||||
| Wine Spectator 90 | |||||
| Ripe and rich. This concentrated red is inky dark in color and thick on the palate, with muscular tannins, smoky oak and ripe fruit flavors of cassis, plum and prune. Has a firm balance, a long finish and definite aging potential. Another outstanding example of the modern style. | |||||
1996 Pingus, Flor de Pingus (750ml) |
$114.00
|
||||
| Robert Parker 89-90 | |||||
| For readers not fortunate enough to latch onto Dominico de Pingus, there is Flor de Pingus, made in far more abundant quantities. Both the 1995 and 1996 are outstanding wines. The 1996 Fleur de Pingus exhibits more structure, grip, and spice than the 1995, as well as intensely-concentrated fruit, full body, and outstanding purity and harmony. | |||||
1999 Vega Sicilia Valbuena 5Er Ano (750ml) |
$129.00
|
||||
| Robert Parker 91 | |||||
| A strong effort for Valbuena, the tight but elegant 1999 reveals crisp underlying acidity as well as firm tannin, medium body, and pure black currant fruit, kirsch, new saddle leather, and sweet vanilla notes. Patience will be required. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2017. | |||||
| FineWine International | |||||
| 75% Tempranillo, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, Malbec, Albillo. Average age of vines: Over 40 years; some vines 80 years or older. | |||||
| Wine Spectator 90 | |||||
| This fresh, lively red shows black cherry and cranberry flavors with sweet vanilla oak notes and floral and spice accents. Ripe tannins and fresh acidity keep it balanced. | |||||
2003 Bodegas Roda Cirsion (750ml) |
$235.00
|
||||
| Robert Parker 94 | |||||
| From a vintage with record heat, the 2003 Cirsion is purple/black in color. On the nose, the wine offers roasted herbal aromas, forest floor, blackberry, and licorice notes. More structured than the 2001, on the palate it is dense and sweet with plenty of power but not the subtlety of the latter vintage. It will continue to evolve for another 5-6 years and offer prime drinking from 2013 to 2028. Jay Miller | |||||
| Wine Spectator 93 | |||||
| Concentrated, lush and powerful, with ripe fruit flavors of blackberry and cassis framed by toasty, coffee oak and backed by big but well-integrated tannins. Stays fresh, with mineral and floral notes emerging on the finish. Modern in style. Drink now through 2013. 580 cases made. | |||||
| Wine Enthusiast 94 | |||||
| Fewer than 600 cases of this silky giant were made, but the best rarely comes in quantity. This is a ripe weighty wine with earth and vanilla notes supporting cassis, black cherry and fresh-roasted coffee aromoas and flavors. The feel is stacked and the finish very long. Tannic but not aggressive; a huge success for a broiling-hot vintage. | |||||
2003 Campo Eliseo, Tinto de Toro (750ml) |
$72.00
|
||||
| Robert Parker 90 | |||||
| Not as profound as the 2001, this wine, made by the brilliant Bordeaux oenologist team of Dany and Michel Rolland, exhibits a dense ruby/purple-tinged color along with sweet aromas of kirsch, black fruits, licorice, pepper, and spice box. Opulent and medium-bodied, with abundant fruit, nicely integrated wood, acidity, alcohol, and tannin, and a fleshy, long finish, it will drink well for 7-8 years. | |||||
| Wine Spectator 92 | |||||
| This modern red is rich and plush, coating the mouth with ripe tannins that carry coffee, chocolate, plum and cassis flavors. Big but balanced. Stays harmonious through the floral finish. | |||||
2005 Vall Llach Embruix, Priorat (750ml) |
$40.00
|
||||
| Robert Parker 91 | |||||
| "The 2005 Embruix (?bewitched? in Catalan), sourced from the estate?s younger vines, is a blend of 38% Garnacha, 26% Carinena, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Syrah, and 6% Merlot. Fifty percent of the wine was barrel fermented and all of it was aged for 16 months in seasoned French oak. Crimson-colored, the wine has an attractive nose of cedar, tobacco, pencil lead, black cherry, and blackberry. Full-bodied, plush, forward, and nearly seamless, it has lots of spicy dark fruits, silky tannin, excellent depth, and a pure finish. Drink this pleasurable wine over the next 6-8 years." | |||||
| Wine Enthusiast 92 | |||||
| "Vall Llach Embruix may be the winery?s base-level offering but it?s no starter wine. Five grapes led by Garnacha are blended to achieve a potent and piercing brew of blueberry aromas, black cherry and cassis flavors, and a rich, chocolaty finish. Modern in style, and making no apologies for it. Equal in quality to the excellent 2004 Embruix." | |||||
